Mid-range? Fifty to a hundred. Nicer guesthouses, maybe a few tours thrown in. You’ll be comfy, eating better food. Still affordable, though.

Luxury? Forget it, unless you’re loaded. One hundred and fifty plus a day, easily. That’s fancy hotels, private drivers, all the bells and whistles. It’s a different trip entirely.

Ten days? Whoa, huge range. Three hundred bucks, minimum, budget style. Upwards of fifteen hundred, or even more, if you’re splashing out. It all depends on your priorities and tastes.

My cousin, Sarah, went in 2024, spent around $800 for a week. She did a mix of things:

• Some budget stuff
• A few mid-range experiences
• Lots of delicious Lao food! Seriously.

She said the food was amazing. She even tried that sticky rice, it was the bomb! She also hiked up to Kuang Si Falls — Breathtaking! It’s unforgettable. Remember to factor in flights too, they can be sneaky expensive. Seriously, plan ahead!

How much money do I need for Laos?

My biggest splurge? That freakin’ hot air balloon ride over Vang Vieng. Cost a fortune, but, holy smokes, the karst landscape… Unforgettable, worth every penny even though my bank account cried.

Where my money went:

• Accommodation: Hostels, man. $5-8 a night. Totally doable. Luang Prabang a bit pricier.
• Transportation: Songthaews! Cheap as chips if you know how to bargain. Tuk-tuks rip you off – beware. Bus travel between cities? Budget $10-20 depending on distance.
• Activities: Kuang Si Falls entrance fee? Cheap! Balloon ride? Astronomical. Caves? Modest fees. Factor it in. Seriously.
• Beer: Okay, this needs its own category. Beerlao is the nectar of the gods, and it’s ridiculously affordable. But, yeah…
• Souvenirs: Silk scarves. Wooden carvings. I went a little overboard. Consider shipping…
• Unexpected: Laundry. Sunscreen because I forgot mine. That one super touristy cocktail. It happens. Add 15% padding.

Luang Prabang is definitely more expensive than Vientiane. Fact. Vang Vieng? Activities will kill your budget. I overspent every single day. No regrets.

Seriously though, that balloon ride? Worth it.

How much should I pay for a tuk tuk in Laos?

Negotiate. Expect 10,000-50,000 Kip. That’s $2-$10 USD. Six people fit.

• Price wildly fluctuates. Location matters.
• Always haggle. Don’t be a patsy. My trip last month? Paid 25,000 Kip for a long ride to Luang Prabang.
• Better than taxis. Easier to find, often cheaper. Avoid scams. My friend got ripped off near the night market.

2024 Update: Inflation’s a bitch. Expect higher prices in touristy areas.

My 2023 trip to Vietnam proved significantly cheaper than my 2022 Laos adventure. Expect to pay more for quality in Laos. I spent roughly $30 a day in Vietnam, $45 in Laos.

Also, shorter trips, sometimes, are oddly pricier due to the convenience factor for them, makes sense. The “market price” fluctuates with the time of day and prevailing weather, and also a driver’s mood it seems like. I always check with my hotel, like, the desk guy, and ask their pricing suggestion. I tend to overpay slightly for friendliness and good vibes. Call it a tourist tax, or a tip. Some things, you know, are worth it.
