For domestic flights, arrive 2 hours early; for international, 3 hours. Check in online 24 hours before to save time. Also, be mindful of baggage drop cut-off times, which may be earlier.

How Early Should I Arrive at the Airport?

Okay, lemme tell ya ’bout airport arrival times, ’cause I’ve been there, stressed and sweating.

Generally, check in online a day before. Like, clockwork.

Seriously, aim to land at the airport 2-3 hours before your flight takes off. Trust me. This is so useful when you are travelling at peak times.

Baggage drop cut-off? Pay attention! They won’t wait.

Remember that trip to Rome, 14 May 2022? Thought I was cool, strolled in just 90 minutes before. Big mistake.

Missed the baggage drop deadline by, like, 5 minutes. Had to gate-check my suitcase, cost me £50 extra, and delayed the boarding. Never again.

So, 3 hours it is, especially for international flights. Now I normally travel with hand luggage only where possible.

Is it better to arrive 2 hours before flight or boarding?

Two hours. Before flight. Not boarding.

Enough time, usually.

Check-in closes, eventually. Security, a gamble.

Miss the flight. Your problem.

  • Baggage drop deadlines exist. Don’t ignore them.
  • TSA PreCheck: Worth it if you travel a lot. Speeds things up. I prefer Global Entry.
  • Airport bars distract from the stress. Maybe.
  • Time, always relative, right?
  • My record for shortest arrival-to-gate time? 22 minutes. Pure luck. Don’t try this at home. Or anywhere.

Arrive early. Or don’t. See what happens.

Should I arrive 2 hours before flight or boarding?

Two hours, yes, two hours before the scheduled flight departure, that’s etched in my mind. It feels like yesterday, rushing through security at JFK, Mom’s frantic energy a tangible thing. Was it really only 2023?

The echoing halls of the airport, always this strange, liminal space. Three hours, for international flights? A lifetime stretched before you.

  • Domestic flights: Two hours before departure.
  • International flights: Three hours, a small eternity, pre-flight.

Check-in, a necessary ritual. Security, a dance of anxiety and compliance. Finding the gate, a quest in a maze of moving sidewalks and hurried footsteps. I miss her.

Two hours. Or was it longer that time in Berlin? The gate, a beacon in the chaos. Always arrive early, that’s the key.

  • Check-in: Get it done.
  • Security: Breathe.
  • Gate: Find it. Claim it.

Boarding… that first step onto the plane, a threshold crossed. Away. This time in 2024, alone. Oh, how the world keeps spinning. Always spinning.

The air smells different somehow, doesn’t it?

Do you still need to arrive 3 hours before a flight?

Two hours… staring at the departure board. Used to be three, for that trip to see my sister in Rome, back in ‘21. She… isn’t there anymore. Now it’s just… two hours. Empty gate. Empty time.

Domestic… hour and a half, maybe two. Like that business trip to Chicago last fall. Rain. So much rain. Didn’t close a single deal. Just… rain and hotel coffee. Three hours… international. London. Always London.

  • Domestic: 1.5-2 hours prior.
  • International: 3 hours prior.

That London trip… meant something once. Now? Another airport beer. Another delayed flight. Another… empty arrival. These times… they’re guidelines. Rules. But what’s the real measure? The lost time? Or the time wasted waiting? Rome… London… Chicago… Just names now. Echoes. Two hours… Ticking. Slowly. Too slowly.
