Grab Payment Methods: How to Pay?

Okay, so Grab payment? Let me tell you, it’s a bit of a whirlwind. I mostly use my debit card, it’s just easiest. On 14th July, I paid for a Grab ride to the airport (Ninoy Aquino, Manila, cost about ₱500). Swiped and done. Simple.

Sometimes, I pay my Grab driver directly. Cash. Old school, I know. Feels safer sometimes, less techy stuff involved.

Online banking? Yeah, I’ve used that too, through their app. A bit fiddly, honestly. Remember one time in Cebu, December last year, trying to pay for groceries? Took ages. ATM, too, just another option. Honestly, I don’t bother often.

In short: Credit/debit card, cash, online banking, ATM. That’s your Grab payment options.

What payment method does Vietnam use?

Cash…yeah, Vietnam still loves cash. I saw Grandma pay for pho with crumpled dongs last Tet.

  • Cash is king, seriously.

But wait, cards are creeping in. Kinda slowly, though. Hmmm… tourist spots are card-friendly.

  • I used my Visa at that fancy cafe near Hoan Kiem Lake last month. No probs.

Dong, dong, dong. So much cash. Do ppl really trust cards here? I mean, I do, mostly.

  • Locals prefer cash. Is that ’cause they’re old-school or something else?

Oh, cards in tourist areas… Convenience is key. I wonder if more places will adopt them soon?

  • Cards are handy!

Payment Methods in Vietnam:

  • Dominant: Cash. Everyone, like, really uses cash. It’s just the way it is.
  • Growing: Cards. Visa, Mastercard, etc. More common in cities, especially tourist hotspots.
  • Other: Mobile payment apps. But that is not as used in the country.

Why Cash is Still King (for now):

  • Habit: Vietnamese people are used to cash. Old habits die hard, ya know?
  • Infrastructure: Not all places have card readers. Especially smaller shops or street vendors.
  • Trust: Some people distrust electronic payments. Fear of fraud, maybe?
  • Fees: Merchants might avoid card fees.

Card Acceptance in Tourist Areas:

  • Hotels: Almost always accept cards.
  • Restaurants: Mid-range to high-end ones usually do. Street food? Forget about it.
  • Shops: Bigger stores in tourist areas accept cards. Souvenir shops, too, usually.
  • Taxis/Ride-hailing: Some, but not all. Confirm beforehand!

My Personal Card Usage:

  • I use my Visa for online shopping (duh!), fancy dinners, and paying for Grab.
  • For everyday stuff like coffee or banh mi? Cash all the way.
  • I carry both cash and a card at all times. Just in case.
