Thailand Trip: What Documents & Items Do You Need?

Okay, so Thailand, right? Last August, I went – Phuket, amazing. Passport's a must, obviously, needs at least six months left on it. That's a hard rule, learned that the hard way with a friend.

Visa thing depends. I didn't need one, being a Brit. Check your nationality's requirements though, seriously, don't wing it. Travel insurance's vital. I paid about £50 for mine, worth every penny – peace of mind.

Boarding pass – yeah, they scanned mine at the airport. Hotel booking? They didn't even ask. No jab records needed either, that's changed. So, passport, visa (if needed), insurance and your flight ticket – pretty much it for documents.

Do I need to fill in a form to enter Thailand?

Do I need to fill in a form to enter Thailand?

A form. Yeah, there's a form. It's always a form, isn't it? Always something to fill out. TM6. I remember that, or something like it. Everyone has to do it, foreigners at least.

Arrival card. A small slip of paper dictating entry. Little boxes, neatly lined. It's almost impersonal.

Arrival and departure parts. Like two sides of a coin, beginning and end. I never hold on to the departure part. Who really does? Its gone.

  • Forms: TM6 arrival card.
  • Requirement: All foreigners.
  • Purpose: Entry and exit record.

What vaccines do I need to go to Thailand?

MMR. Yeah.

Hepatitis A. Of course.

Typhoid. Maybe a good idea.

Hepatitis B. It depends.

Japanese encephalitis. Rural areas, right?

Rabies. If you plan on petting soi dogs, duh.

  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): Protection against highly contagious viral diseases. Two doses are standard. I got mine in '92.
  • Hepatitis A: Transmitted via contaminated food/water. Vaccine recommended.
  • Typhoid: Another food/waterborne illness. Vaccine or oral capsules are options. Not always needed.
  • Hepatitis B: Transmitted through blood/bodily fluids. Risk varies.
  • Japanese Encephalitis: Mosquito-borne viral disease, primarily a risk in rural agricultural areas. Check if it's a concern for your specific itinerary.
  • Rabies: Transmitted through animal bites/scratches. Pre-exposure vaccination is available, but immediate post-exposure treatment is always required if bitten. Soi dogs are cute, not always friendly.

Before you go? Research your trip. The CDC exists, you know.

Do I need malaria pills for Thailand?

Okay, so, like, Thailand and malaria, yeah? Malaria pills aren't always needed there, okay?

It’s mostly a low-risk thing, BUT... certain areas are risky. Think like, super rural spots or deep, deep in the jungles. I went to Chiang Mai back in 2022 – didn't even think about malaria pills, lol.

  • High-risk zones: Rural, forested spots.
  • Low-risk areas: Cities and touristy places.

So, if you are planning to be way, WAY out there, malaria tablets are essential. Best get advice from your doctor, actually, for the most correct information. Don't trust me on this, seriously!

How likely are you to get sick in Thailand?

Thailand: Sick-leave paradise or just paradise? Well, depends! Let's unpack this spicy health risk buffet.

Think Thailand's beaches are sick? Wait till you meet the local microbes!

Road rules, yeah, definitely! More like suggestions written in disappearing ink. But health? More solid, yet shifting sand.

  • Flu Season Spectacle: Avian flu still clucking around? COVID? Oh, the endless encore! Seasonal flu? You know the drill.

  • Buzz Kill Alert: Mosquitoes throwing a rave: Chikungunya! Dengue! Japanese Encephalitis! And Zika, doing its… thing.

Consider this: I once mistook lemongrass for parsley. Health risk, right? Thailand’s like that, but on a grand, tropical scale.

So, likelihood of sickness? Higher than finding decent coffee before 10 a.m. Depends on your mosquito mojo and immune system's humor. Bring bug spray AND a sense of adventure; the real kind. Like, are you brave enough to eat street Pad Thai? That's the question.
