What happens if you don't choose a seat on a flight?

If you don't choose a seat on a flight, the airline will automatically assign one to you. This usually happens during check-in, either online or at the airport. While you might not get your preferred spot, you'll still be assigned a seat before boarding.

Unassigned Airplane Seat: What Happens?

Okay, so you didn't pick a seat on your flight? No biggie, honestly.

Generally, the airline just picks one for you when you check in or get your boarding pass. Happened to me last October flying with budget airline, I forgot add on seat selection, and they slotted me in right before boarding at the gate. Phew.

Basically, unassigned seats get filled.

Don't stress too much about it, but... I mean, pick a seat if you really care where you sit. I learned that the hard way. Got stuck in the middle seat on a red eye once. Never again.

Is selecting a seat necessary when booking a flight? Nope. But it gives you control.

Forgot to select a seat? Relax. Airline will handle it.

Worst case? Maybe you're separated from your travel buddy. Or you get stuck in a window seat when you're claustrophobic. Been there, felt that. Just breathe and hope for a kind neighbor.

What happens if you skip seat selection?

Ugh, I totally skipped seat selection on my flight to Cancun last month, in October 2024. Figured I'd risk it.

Bad idea! I ended up smack dab in a middle seat on a packed flight.

Seriously, nine hours wedged between a snorer and a dude hogging the armrest!

I was SO cramped and cranky when I landed, but I saved 25 bucks, so whatever. I guess.

  • Lesson Learned: Always pick your seat! Esp. on long flights.
  • Cost-benefit analysis: saving money is not always worth the discomfort.
  • Upgrade hack: If seat selection is free and all the seats are bad, wait until check-in. Sometimes better seats open up last minute! Don’t count on it tho, LOL.
  • Airport tip: Sometimes you get lucky at the check-in counter. A really nice agent might find something better for ya.
  • My opinion: Airlines are such money-grabbing jerks about this seat selection crap. Total scam.
  • Snoring Passenger: Seriously, he should've bought some of those nose strip things!

What happens if you dont select seats in web check in?

Unselected seats? Airline assigns one. Random. Potentially suboptimal.

Web check-in? Seat selection optional. Doesn't necessitate pre-selected seats.

Pre-booked seats? Redundant re-selection pointless. Waste of time, frankly.

Ticket purchase without seat reservation? Same consequence. Random assignment. Expect the unexpected.

Key Considerations:

  • Random Allocation: Airlines assign seats arbitrarily if you don't choose.
  • Web Check-in Independence: Seat selection and web check-in are separate.
  • Avoid Redundancy: Don't select twice. One choice suffices.
  • Potential for Poor Seats: Be prepared for a less desirable seat. My last flight? Middle seat, aisle blocked. Nightmare.

My flight last month? Southwest. No assigned seating. Chaos. But, got there. Eventually. This year, 2024.
