What happens if you don't select your seat?

If you don't select your airline seat, one will be assigned to you at check-in. This is usually a random, unclaimed seat. Choosing a seat in advance ensures you sit where you prefer, especially important for travelers with specific needs or those wanting to sit together.

Ugh, flying. So last July, flying from Denver to Boston – I totally forgot to pick a seat on Southwest. No biggie, right? Nope. Checked in online, and they stuck me in the middle seat, row 37. Nightmare.
Seriously cramped. Next time, paying extra for a window seat is worth it. The extra legroom's a myth, but at least I can lean against something.
Basically, if you don't pre-select, airlines randomly assign. Could be great, could be awful. Prepare for the worst. Learn from my mistake.
