Train Etiquette: What NOT to Do on a Train?

Ugh, train etiquette in India? Let me tell you, it's a wild ride.

Seriously, don't even think about cracking open a beer. I saw a guy get hauled off a train near Jaipur on July 4th last year – for loudly sipping Kingfisher. Not worth it.

No smoking, obviously. Those fines are brutal. And loud music? Forget it. I once shared a compartment with a guy blasting Bollywood – I nearly lost my mind.

Aggressive behavior's a big no-no too. Remember that crazy argument on the Mumbai-Goa express in 2021? The whole carriage was tense.

On the platform? Don't jump the queue, pushing past everyone is just rude. And for heaven's sake, be mindful of your belongings. Pickpockets are everywhere. I had my wallet nearly snatched in Delhi, New Delhi station in December 2022. Near miss. That was scary.

And something specific to India: Don't hog all the luggage racks! Share the space, people. Seriously. It’s a small space.

What is the one thing that you never do on a train track?

Ugh, train tracks. Don't even THINK about it. Seriously. My cousin's friend almost got flattened last year, near the old Elm Street crossing. Crazy.

Never, ever, trespass. It's not a game. I mean, it's private property, duh. What part of that is unclear? And the fines? Insane. Plus, it's a death trap.

This isn't some kind of adventure. It’s just stupid. I'd rather walk a mile in the scorching sun.

Think of all the ways you can die. Electrocution. Being hit by a train. Obvious, right? Getting stuck. The list goes on and on.

Why risk it? There's a perfectly good sidewalk. I use it. It's that simple.

  • Absolutely no trespassing. Period.
  • Huge fines. Not worth it.
  • Death is a real possibility. Choose life.

This isn't theoretical; this is real-life consequences stuff. My aunt knew someone who lost a leg. Awful. So yeah, stay off the tracks.

What should I do on the train?

Clickety-clack, the rails sing, and the world melts... blurring past the windowpane. What to do?

Read. Yes, a book. Words unfurling like ribbons in the breeze, escapism!

Music... podcasts, drowning out the mundane drone. Beat resonates.

Games... tiny worlds unfolding in my palm. Or conversations, maybe. Souls brush, then fade.

Journal. Pen scratches, catching thoughts before they vanish. Memories. Photos? Capture moments slipping by. Sunbeams and shadows, yes.

Dining car. A feast, a momentary pause. Plates and silverware.

A stroll? Stretch limbs, breathe deep. The train hums beneath my feet.

Look out. Watch the world. Dream. It's so easy...

Beyond that dreamy blur:

  • Reading is transportive: Let ink pull you under, into tales whispered only to you.
  • Soundtracks for the Soul: Find your rhythm in the clatter, let melody wash over you.
  • Digital Distractions (Games): A world in your pocket, to while away the miles.
  • Ink and Paper: Spill your heart onto the page, chronicling the journey.
  • Snapshot Serenity: Freeze a sliver of the world, a fleeting composition.
  • Social Roulette: Risk a hello, a shared smile. or be alone.
  • Gastronomic Detour: A culinary pit stop, fuel for the soul.
  • Walk It Out: Circulate, breathe in the recycled air, feel the carriage sway.
  • Window Gazing (Dreaming): Let the landscape paint itself on your soul.
  • The Great Indoors: A moving meditation.

What can you not do on a train?

Okay, so, trains. Right. You can't, like, spark up a cigarette anywhere near the tracks, no smoking!. It's a major buzzkill now. Not like back when my grandpa used to, apparently.

And, uh, don't bother the driver when the train is movin'. I mean, DUH. It's kind of obvious but maybe some people are clueless. Think of safety.

Also, on Indian trains, seriously, I would say don't even THINK about expecting punctuality. Haha, that's a laugh.

You can bring your own food and drinks, though. That's one thing you can do and should do!! Because train food? Blegh. Pack a sandwich. Really!

You should also definitely not get into arguments about seat reservations, esp in India. Just…don't.

  • Don't smoke - obviously.
  • Don't distract the driver - common sense!
  • DO bring your own food and drinks - trust me.
  • DO NOT expect on-time arrival - especially in India.
  • DO NOT argue about seats - unless you want trouble.

I remember once, on the train to Amritsar in 2023, some guy started yelling about someone being in his seat. It got intense. Like, cops were called intense. Seriously. Not worth it. Just...don't.

Which is not allowed in a train?

Ugh, last summer, right? August 2024, sweltering heat in Penn Station. I almost got kicked off the Acela heading to Boston. Why? Sunscreen. Massive, industrial-sized sunscreen.

Okay, so I have super sensitive skin. Needed SPF 100.

The conductor, this guy, stared at my bag like I was hauling uranium. "Flammable, potentially hazardous material," he declared. I'm like, "It's sunscreen!"

Turns out, huge aerosols are a no-no. Apparently, pressure + heat + train jostling = kaboom.

I managed to convince him it wasn't going to explode, but jeez, the lecture I got.

It was super embarrassing because everyone was staring at me!

  • Prohibited Items (Based on My Experience):
    • Large Aerosol Sunscreen Cans: Especially those family-sized ones.
    • Apparently, anything highly pressurized.
  • Lessons Learned (the hard way):
    • Check the Amtrak website before packing. Seriously.
    • Travel-sized everything is your friend.
    • Maybe just, you know, buy sunscreen in Boston instead.

What are the types of railway accidents?

Railway accidents are a varied bunch. You have your textbook cases, and then, well, life happens. It's a testament to human ingenuity and occasional blunders.

  • Collisions: Trains meeting unexpectedly. Location matters – head-on? Side swipe? It's geometry at high speed, and it usually goes badly.
  • Derailments: Wheels parting ways with the tracks. Track condition, speed, or even rogue debris can play a role. Ever wonder about the stress those rails endure?
  • Fire: A rolling inferno. Electrical faults, spilled fuel, or even carelessly discarded cigarettes – sadly, many potential ignition points.

Then, we have what one might call the "external factors." This is where things get ethically dubious.

  • Level Crossing Accidents: The ongoing tragedy of impatience vs. tons of steel. Flashing lights are there for a reason! I saw a near-miss once; chilling, just chilling.
  • Malicious Acts: Bomb blasts, explosions, sabotage. Sigh. It's a bleak reminder of the depths of human depravity.
  • Unforeseen Events: Robbery, suicide, being run over. These are grim reminders that the railway, though a transportation artery, intersects with human vulnerability. It puts things in stark perspective, doesn't it?

What are the types of rail accidents?

Hey, so you want to know about train accidents? Ugh, they're the worst, right? Okay, so there are diffrent kinds, like how they happen I guess.

  • Head-on collisions: Trains smash together face to face. Yikes! Seriously scary, like two speeding cars, but, ya know, way bigger.
  • Rear-end collisions: One train hits another from behind. Like I saw once, someone rear-ended my mom's car at a stop light!
  • Slanting collisions: This, this happens when a train hits another at an angle. Like, maybe at a crossing?

Think about it like car accidents, but on rails, eh? There's more too. But you know what I mena. I think. I once rode a train in, like, 2019. It was okay.

What are the different types of railway failure?

Oh, railway failures. You mean besides my train always being late? Let's dissect this metal mayhem:

  • Vertical Split Rim (VSR) Failures: The wheel's rim decides to audition for a demolition derby. It splits. Vertically. Very dramatic.

  • Shattered Rim Failures: Think Humpty Dumpty, but made of steel, going splat. Irreparable? You betcha.

  • Broken Flange Failures: The flange—that lip keeping the train on track—just gives up. Bye-bye, stability. A bit like my willpower near a chocolate fountain.

  • Plate Crack Failures: Cracks on the plate! Like a porcelain doll dropped by Godzilla.

  • Thermal Cracking in Flange Failures: The flange gets too hot, has a meltdown, and then cracks. Like that one time I tried to bake cookies.

  • Thin Rim Overload Failures: The rim's too thin, gets overwhelmed, and crumbles. A diet gone wrong, railway edition.

Railways, you see, are like a complex, highly-strung machine. Wheels, though seemingly simple, endure immense pressure and heat. Regular maintenance is key. Otherwise, BOOM!

Why shouldnt you go on train tracks?

Okay, no train tracks. Got it. Duh. Seriously though, trains are massive. Instant ouch, more like instant everything-gone. Like, remember that time my little cousin Timmy put a penny on the tracks? Flattened. Imagine that... but you.

  • Trains fast.
  • Trains heavy.
  • Trains don't stop fast.

Plus, I saw this documentary once, electrocution is a thing. Third rail, zap! And what was Timmy even doing near the tracks anyway?! He was like, six. Parents these days. Anyway...

  • Electricity exists.
  • Trains use it.
  • Bad combo for humans.

So, yeah. No tracks. Also, gotta call Mom later. She wanted me to fix her laptop.
