When should you ask for an upgrade flight?

Best Time to Request a Flight UpgradeRequest a flight upgrade at the airport after check-in. Gate agents have real-time seat availability and are more likely to grant upgrades then. Checking in online beforehand doesn't guarantee upgrade success.

Best time to request a flight upgrade for optimal chances?

Okay, so you want me to tell you when to snag that sweet, sweet upgrade? Lemme think...

Honestly? I've had the best luck asking at the airport, like, right after I've gotten my boarding pass. Sounds kinda obvious, I guess.

It's like, then they really know who's shown up and who hasn't. And the gate agent's got a real view.

Plus, I once got upgraded from economy to business on a flight from Heathrow to JFK. I think it was a Monday morning in like September? Cost zero dollers. Score!

I think being polite, and even joking a lil, helps. Like, "Any chance there's room at the inn up front?" or somthin'. Doesn't always work, but what the heck?

Of course, airlines also look at frequent flyer status. My friend used to swear by using miles for an upgrade but it feels like there's less availability for that.

Should I ask for upgrade at check-in or gate?

Alright, so, gate upgrades? They're like finding a twenty in your old jeans – totally unexpected, but, hey, awesome! Asking at check-in? Meh, feels like shouting into a well.

Gate is where the upgrade fairy hangs out. Think of it as the airport's version of a "last chance" saloon, ya know?

Why gate?

  • No-shows happen. Rich people, business peeps, they miss flights. My Uncle Barry once missed his flight to Reno 'cause he was too busy playing bingo. True story!
  • Last minute cancellations. Someone's got cold feet, BAM! Seat opens.
  • Overbooked flights. Airlines overbook like I overeat pizza, and need space.

Also, remember:

  • Be nice. Like, really nice. Think of yourself as auditioning for sainthood.
  • Dress decent. No pajamas, unless they're silk. And maybe an ascot.
  • Have charm. If you look like you need an upgrade so you can finally sleep, that’s a winner.

Oh, and BTW, I heard my neighbor’s cat got upgraded to first class once. Not really, of course! But, you never know, right?!

How much to bid to get an upgrade?

Three AM. Again. Can’t sleep. Thinking about that upgrade bid…

It's tricky, right? I wouldn't go with percentages. That feels too… arbitrary. My gut says bid strategically.

  • Check the remaining economy seats. Fewer seats = higher bid.
  • Consider flight popularity. A busy flight = higher bid needed.
  • Look at the minimum bid. Then add a little. Not much, just enough.

It's the math of hope, I guess. Hope you win. Hope it’s worth it. Last time I tried, the minimum was $150. I bid $175. No luck. That stung. This time, it's a 6-hour flight to Denver. My legs are already killing me just thinking about it in economy. This 2024 upgrade…it has to work. I need that extra legroom. Seriously. I paid $350 for this economy ticket.

I think I'll try $100 more than the minimum. Maybe. It feels risky. But I'm tired of being cramped. I'm tired of everything, really.

This whole bidding thing…It's a gamble. A sad, expensive gamble.
