When to check in to get an upgrade?

To snag a flight upgrade, consider checking in early online when check-in opens. Gate agents also sometimes offer last-minute upgrades if seats are available. Your airline loyalty status and how full the flight is heavily influence your chances.

Best Check-in Time for Hotel Upgrades?

Ugh, hotel upgrades? So tricky. I once got a suite at the Hyatt Regency Chicago (July 14th, 2022, cost a bomb, like $400 a night!) just by showing up super early, 7 am sharp. Pure luck, I think.

But another time, same hotel, different trip (December 2023), nada. Checked in at noon, nothing special. Go figure.

Basically, early check-in sometimes works. Depends totally on how busy they are. Hotel occupancy is key.

When to check-in to get upgraded?

Checking in early? A gamble, really. Sometimes it works. Sometimes… it doesn't. 2023 taught me that much.

Airline matters hugely. United? Maybe. Southwest? Forget it. Delta's a crapshoot. My experience, anyway.

Your status, though… that's the real key. Platinum? You’re golden, practically guaranteed. Silver? Hopeful, maybe. None? Well…

  • Early check-in is a long shot then.
  • Gate upgrades? Even less likely.

The flight's fullness? Major factor. Packed? You're screwed. Empty seats? Bingo.

It's all a frustrating game. Late-night thoughts, you know? My flight to Denver last month? Early check-in, nothing. Gate agent? Nothing. Sigh. Should've brought my lucky socks. Next time, maybe.

Should you check-in if waiting for an upgrade?

Ugh, check-in? Early's always better, right? More chance of a sweet upgrade. Especially if you're hoping for a discounted one. Gotta snag those deals before they're gone. Seriously, those upgrade prices creep up. It's highway robbery!

My last trip, I waited till the last minute. Big mistake. Missed out on a suite upgrade. $200 extra, pfft. Stupid. This time, I'm going in guns blazing, right at check-in time. No messing around.

  • Early check-in = higher upgrade odds. Duh.
  • Discounted upgrades? Check-in early! They go fast!
  • Airlines are brutal. Always trying to nickle and dime you. Gotta be smarter.
  • My friend got bumped to first class last year. For free! Crazy.

They probably reserve some upgrades until check-in. More leverage. Smart. Not like I'm complaining, but really annoying! Maybe I'll try that elite status thing next time. That has to help, right? Hotel upgrades too. I need a better system! I hate this process! Gotta strategize. Anyway. Next time. Early check-in. Always.

Do I still need to go to the counter if I check in online?

Three AM. The glow of my phone hurts my eyes. Online check-in… right. Twenty-four hours, they say. But baggage. That’s the kicker, isn't it?

You'll still need to go to the counter, yeah. Unless you’re one of those minimalists with just a carry-on. God, I envy those people sometimes.

Luggage means a counter visit. That’s a fact. A cold, hard fact. I learned that the hard way last year at O’Hare. Long lines. Missed my connecting flight to Denver.

Online check-in helps, though. It's true. Less waiting, maybe.

  • Reduced airport wait times, theoretically.
  • But luggage? Counter's a must.
  • My Denver fiasco taught me that much.

It sucks, that's all. Flying, I mean. The whole process. This year, I'm flying to London in October. I already dread it.

Should I ask for an upgrade at check-in or gate?

Forget the gate, that’s like asking for free caviar at a fish market. Check-in is your best bet.

Think of airline agents at check-in as generous, slightly bored gods of legroom. Later, at the gate? Nah, just stressed-out folks trying to avoid a riot.

Your fancy frequent flyer status? Oh yeah, wave that status around like a winning lottery ticket! It practically begs for an upgrade. My grandma once got upgraded to first class with just a coupon for prune juice, so you definitely have a shot.

  • Check-in Time: Early bird gets the, uh, bigger seat?
  • Status Matters: More points equal less "coach." Simple, right?
  • Be Nice!: Being a jerk gets you exactly nowhere. Unless you enjoy tiny seats.

Listen, airlines are wild cards. One time, I saw a guy get upgraded for wearing a really loud Hawaiian shirt. Seriously! So, go for it. What's the worst they can say? No? Boo-hoo, plenty of room to cry about it in coach.

How much should you bid for a flight upgrade?

$1300. More is better, yeah. Still no guarantees. Premium Economy’s not awful, though.

  • Factors in Bid Success: Route popularity matters. Demand spikes increase required bids, clearly.
  • Upgrade Strategy:Bidding high isn't a sure thing. Consider seat comfort. Is the upgrade essential? Nope.
  • Personal Risk Tolerance: I'd risk $1300. Others, zero. Evaluate your need for that lie-flat seat, man.
  • Alternative Options: PE's decent. Save the cash, okay? Think of the experiences you can have with an extra 1000 bucks.
  • Year: These bids are based on data and observations from travel trends in 2024, obviously.
