When you have a connecting flight do you have to check in twice?

Connecting flights: One check-in is usually sufficient. Airlines typically check you in for all legs. However, if you receive separate boarding passes for each flight segment, you'll need to check in again at the connecting airport's gate. Confirm with your airline for specific procedures.

Connecting flight: Do I need to check in baggage again?

Okay, so about connecting flights and baggage... Ugh, it's always a tiny bit confusing, right?

Usually, no, you don't need to re-check your bag.

But! Big but!

Think of it this way: did they give you all your boarding passes at the first check-in? All legs of journey printed or on app? If so, baggage usually goes straight thru.

I flew from London (Heathrow) to Miami (via JFK) last July. Paid like £800 return on British Airways. Got boarding passes for both flights when I checked my bag in London. Bag went straight to Miami. Bliss!

However, if the layover involves, like, an overnight stay... or a change in airport... hmmm. That's where it gets tricky. Then yeah, probably have to collect it.

Once, at Charles de Gaulle (Paris) – NEVER AGAIN – I totally did have to re-check it. Huge line. Missed my connecting train to Strasbourg. Cost me extra 50 euro for new ticket. A nightmare. So. Lesson learnt. Always double check. Ask at the counter when you check in first time, just in case!

If you only get one boarding pass, red flag.

Do I have to check in twice if I have a connecting flight?

One check-in, usually. One boarding pass for all. Unless...

Missed the connection? See the airline desk. Simple.

No pass? Transfer desk. Kiosk. Get the pass.

  • Boarding Pass: The holy grail of air travel.
  • Transfer Desk: Airline's help.
  • Kiosk: Self-service. May or may not work.

My cousin, Brenda, once missed her flight. Claimed "turbulence." A likely story. More champagne, I suspect.

Do I have to go through security again for a connecting flight?

Do I have to go through security again for a connecting flight?

It just depends, doesn't it? So tired.

Airside international connections at some airports, they exist. Not all. Dulles was... awful.

Connecting to a domestic flight after international? Yeah, you're doing security again. Customs, immigration. Always. Unless...

  • Preclearance. A dream. Never happens. Like winning the lottery. Still, its so rare.
  • Customs: Required for all international arrivals to inspect goods.
  • Immigration: Required to verify identity and admissibility.
  • Security lines snake forever. Just. So. Slow.

The endless walking. Oh god, my feet. Security again. Shoes off, laptop out. What is the point anymore.
