Why are bananas not allowed on boats?

Bananas on boats are considered bad luck due to a few historical reasons:

  • Pests: Bananas could harbor insects that infested ships and posed health risks to sailors.
  • Fishing: Sticky banana residue on fishermens hands could make bait less attractive to fish, impacting their catch.

Okay, so this whole “no bananas on boats” thing… it’s weird, right? Like, who knew? I certainly didn’t until a few years ago when I was chatting with this old fisherman down at the pier. He was telling me all these crazy superstitions, and the banana one really stuck with me.

Apparently, back in the day, bananas were considered bad luck at sea. And there are a couple of reasons for this. First, think about those big bunches of bananas… they can be a breeding ground for all sorts of creepy crawlies, right? So these bugs would infest the ships, gross! Not to mention potentially making the sailors sick. Makes sense, I guess, when you think about hygiene back then – not exactly what it is today.

The other reason, which I find kind of funny, is the fishing thing. Apparently, the sticky residue from bananas could get on fishermen’s hands. Imagine trying to handle delicate fishing line after peeling a banana – slippery mess! And this could make the bait less appealing to the fish, meaning a smaller catch and maybe even going hungry. It’s kind of like when you get sap on your hands, and you can’t get it off. Sticky bananas, no fish… bad luck. You see how these superstitions get started? It’s not totally out there, when you think about it. Though, I still think it’s a little bit bananas (pun intended, obviously!).
