Why are there no bananas on a boat?

You know, it’s funny… you don’t really think about bananas on boats, do you? But then someone mentions it, and you’re like, “Huh, I never see bananas on fishing boats!” Well, I heard this story once, and it kind of stuck with me. Apparently, it’s seriously bad luck to bring bananas on board. Like, really bad luck.

It’s not just some random thing, either. It actually goes way back. See, back in the day, bananas would ripen so fast – way faster than other fruits. So, if a fishing boat was carrying a bunch of bananas, they’d have to rush back to port before they all went bad, right? Which, obviously, meant they couldn’t stay out fishing as long. And less time fishing equals less fish. Less fish equals less money. So, you see the connection? Bananas = bad luck.

I remember once, I was talking to this old fisherman down at the docks, and he told me this story about his first time out at sea. He was young, didn’t know any better, and packed a banana in his lunch. The whole trip was a disaster! They lost their nets, the engine sputtered, they caught practically nothing. He swore up and down it was the banana! Now, who knows? Maybe it was just coincidence. But… you don’t see many bananas on fishing boats, do you? Makes you think, huh?
