Why is a cruise more expensive for one person?
Why are cruises so ridiculously expensive for one person? Ugh, seriously! It's a total rip-off. I tried to book a Caribbean cruise last year, just a week, you know, a little getaway for myself. And the price? It was almost double what it would have been if I'd gone with a friend. Double! Can you believe that?
They call it a "single supplement," which sounds all official and reasonable, but it's basically a penalty for not having a buddy. They're essentially saying, "Hey, you're only taking up one bed, so we're going to charge you extra to make up for the lost revenue from a second passenger." It's infuriating! I mean, I'm still going to eat, I'm still going to use the pool, I'm still going to maybe even buy that ridiculously overpriced margarita – aren’t I? So why the extra charge? It feels like they're actively discouraging solo travel.
And it's not just the room, is it? Everything feels geared towards couples. Remember that time I saw a couple sharing a huge plate of shrimp cocktail, whilst I sadly munched on a tiny bowl of chips and salsa, the singles' portion? It's petty things, but they add up. It puts a real downer on the whole vacation, you know? It makes you feel… lonely, even though you're surrounded by people. Maybe I'm being overly dramatic, but it really does feel unfair. I'd love to just sail away and relax, but the cost just makes it impossible, a lot of the time. Maybe I should just start a 'Solo Cruise Buddies' Facebook group or something... hmm.
