How many class 31s are left?
Preservation Status of Class 31 Diesel Locomotives
The Class 31 series of diesel locomotives, introduced in the 1950s, played a significant role in British railway operations. However, the passage of time and the introduction of more modern locomotives have gradually reduced the number of operational examples.
As of today, only three Class 31 locomotives remain in active service outside of preservation. These locomotives, designated 31467, 31468, and 31601, are owned and operated by the West Coast Railways charter train company.
One of these three locomotives, 31467, has been restored to its original British Railways (BR) Blue livery. It is a popular choice for special train services and heritage events, embodying the nostalgic charm of British steam-era railways.
The remaining Class 31 locomotives in preservation are scattered across various railway museums and heritage centers. These locomotives serve as a valuable reminder of the important contribution these workhorses made to British rail transportation.
It is worth noting that the majority of Class 31 locomotives were withdrawn from service in the 1980s and 1990s. Many were subsequently scrapped, while others were sold to private owners or preserved for historical purposes.
The preservation of these iconic locomotives ensures that future generations can appreciate the engineering and historical significance of the Class 31 series. They continue to inspire railway enthusiasts and serve as a reminder of the vital role diesel locomotives played in the evolution of British rail transportation.
