The most crucial distinction lies in the specific Shinkansen types you can use with your JR Pass. On the Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu Shinkansen lines – the busiest and most popular routes – your JR Pass grants access to the following services:

• Hikari: A frequently running service offering a good balance of speed and convenience.
• Sakura: Primarily serving the Kyushu Shinkansen, this train provides a reliable and comfortable travel option.
• Kodama: A slower, more frequent service that stops at more stations. While slower, this can be a strategic choice if you need to reach a less-accessible station.
• Tsubame: Operating primarily on the Hokuriku Shinkansen (connecting Tokyo to Kanazawa), the Tsubame is a frequent and convenient option when covered by the JR Pass.

Crucially, your JR Pass does not cover the following Shinkansen services:

• Nozomi: This is the fastest Shinkansen service on the Tokaido and Sanyo lines. While tempting due to its speed, using a Nozomi train requires a separate ticket purchase.
