Okay, so, scenic train trips in Canada? Worth it? I've actually done one!
It IS pricey, I ain't gonna lie. But, like, was it an awesome experience? Totally. For sure Sleeper Plus is the way to go for longer hauls.
Packing light is key, trust me. Space is tight.
I traveled across Canada on Via Rail. Amazing landscapes.
Think I paid around $4000 back in August 2018, starting in Vancouver. A splurge, yeah, but memories for a lifetime. The food was surprisingly good, too! And the people I met... just incredible. Worth it to see mountains, forests, and prairie from the window. The journey is the destination kinda thing, ya know? No wifi for days. It forces you to disconnect.
It's costly, definitely, but the scenery's breathtaking and a real experience.
Which is better VIA Rail or Rocky Mountaineer?

Rocky Mountaineer: Food, okay, pampering.
VIA Rail: More like...real train?
Cost is KEY. Is pampering worth it? Nah. For me, VIA Rail.

VIA Rail is fine. See Canada. Get there. Save money.

Remember that terrible train trip to Winnipeg in 2022? Packed like sardines. Hope VIA Rail isn't always like that. Maybe Rocky Mountaineer has more space. But space costs $$$.

What is the best time of year for a Canadian Rockies trip?
Ok, so the Canadian Rockies, huh? Listen, I went there last August. It was, like, insane.
We stayed near Banff, you know, at that cabin my cousin owns? Super rustic, kinda smelly, but whatever, free is free. The weather? Hot. Surprisingly hot.
It was August 15th-22nd, yeah those exact dates.
I'm talking T-shirt weather during the day. Hiking was great. So many tourists though. Like, seriously, so many. But... what can you do?
We hiked to Lake Agnes Tea House. Uphill, obvs, but the views? Worth it! And the tea, of course.
- Weather: Hot during the day.
- Crowds: HUGE.
- Time: Mid-August 2024.
- Place: Banff area, Lake Agnes.
- Cabin smell: Kinda like mildew and old pine.
Night got cold, real cold. I needed a jacket. Almost needed gloves even. Crazy, right?
We also drove to Lake Louise. Super blue, even bluer than the photos I saw online. Worth the hassle of the crowds, def.
- Lake Louise: Stunning, really really really blue.
- Night Time Temp: Quite cold.
- Clothing: Layers are a must!
- Driving: The drive was long, but beautiful.
- Traffic: The traffic was killer.
Honestly, I wouldn't go any earlier than late July. July and August are the sweet spot. Less chance of snow, more chance of sunshine.
The only downside? All the other peeps. But hey, can’t have it all.
