Can you stand on trains?

Yep, you can stand. It’s totally normal, especially when it’s packed.

Grip something – a pole, a strap, whatever. Trains can jerk suddenly.

Rules might be a tad different depending on the train, but generally standing is fine. Listen to the conductor, though, and look out for signs.

I remember once taking the 7:15am Metra into Chicago (22nd July, cost me $6.75). Couldn’t get a seat, stood the whole way, crammed in like a sardine. Held onto a pole for dear life. Not fun, but got me to work.

Am I allowed to stand on a train?

Standing on a train? I think so. Pay for ticket, stand if I want? Yeah!

  • No rules against that I know of.

Reserved seats exist, but who cares? Seats are for the weak. Hah!

  • Unless its rush hour. Ugh.

Reddit has opinions? Wow. Groundbreaking. Stand if seats gone, duh.

  • Or if I’m feeling rebellious today, I can stand.

Holding on is key. Not falling is cooler.

  • Saw a guy faceplant once near Penn Station. Ouch!

Why stand? No clue. My back hurts just thinking about it. Maybe to see over ppl’s heads.

  • Or stretch my legs after my shift at the bakery. Standing helps.

Can I put my feet on train seats?

Feet on seats? Disgusting. Inconsiderate. Zero self-awareness. Don’t do it.

  • Germ spreader: Think about where your shoes have been.
  • Space hog: Seats are for sitting, not your feet.
  • Disrespectful: Shows disregard for others. Period.
  • Damaging: Can scuff or tear upholstery. Costs money. Your money?

Breaks rules on most public transport. Fines apply. Saw a guy get booted off a train in London last week for it. £80 fine. Serves him right. My train, my rules.

  • Hygiene issue: Public transport’s already a petri dish. Don’t add to it.
  • Common courtesy: Basic manners, people. Treat public spaces with respect.
  • Personal space: Keep your feet to yourself.
  • Safety hazard: In an emergency, loose items can block exits.

Just…don’t. It’s not rocket science. My shoes, my business. But your feet on a shared seat? Nope.

Can I take my shoes off on a train?

Train etiquette varies. Removal of footwear is generally tolerated. My experience? Frequent barefoot travel on European trains, 2024. Socks acceptable. Planes? Different story. Stricter rules there.

  • Europe: Relatively lax. Personal preference.
  • Scotland (trains): Unlikely to cause issue. Still, discretion advised.
  • Air travel: Shoes remain on. Hygiene concerns.

Discomfort is subjective. Barefoot travel? My choice. Hygiene is key. Clean socks recommended. Consider others. No guarantees. Ultimately, your responsibility.

Respect social norms. People are weird.
