Can a hotel legally cancel your reservation?
Ugh, can you believe this? Hotels can actually CANCEL your reservation?! It's absolutely infuriating! I mean, seriously, what are we supposed to do? Unlike airlines (which, let's be honest, aren't always great either, but at least there's some protection), there's practically NOTHING stopping a hotel from pulling the rug out from under you. It's like, you've planned this whole trip, maybe for months, booked flights, maybe even tours or something, and BAM! They just...cancel. Leaving you totally high and dry.
It happened to a friend of mine, Lisa. She booked a room for a wedding in Napa, months in advance. A week before the wedding, the hotel calls and says, "Oops, sorry, overbooked! Your reservation is canceled." Can you imagine the stress? She was frantically calling other hotels, prices were sky-high, and it totally ruined the excitement leading up to the wedding. Who needs that kind of stress? It's just wrong.
And what can you even do? Apparently, not much. There's just this huge power imbalance. It feels so unfair! Like, what about our rights as consumers? We're the ones paying them, right? It's not like we can just decide not to show up and not pay (well, maybe we can, but there are consequences!). So why can they just cancel on us? Makes. No. Sense.
Seriously, someone needs to do something about this. We need better regulations, something to protect travelers from this kind of arbitrary nonsense. It's just not right. It leaves you feeling so powerless, like you're at their mercy. And who wants to feel like that, especially when you're supposed to be relaxing on vacation? It's just...Ugh. Don't even get me started.
