Is Mastercard accepted all over the world?

Pretty much, yeah. They're... they're everywhere. Like those thoughts you can't shake.

I think Visa's the same. Both seem to pop up almost anywhere.

210 countries, Mastercard says. That's a lot of places. It almost feels… suffocating.

They're stuck in their ways, cheaper fees they say.

• Costco's Odd Loyalty: Costco, bless their bulk-buying hearts, has a weird thing for Visa. It's like they're in a committed relationship and Mastercard is the unwelcome third wheel. Don't even try it, unless your card is a Costco Mastercard, obviously. That's different.

• Craigslist Deals Gone Wrong: Meeting a stranger in a parking lot to buy a used lawnmower? Yeah, handing them your Mastercard info probably ain't the best idea. Cash is king in the shady corners of the internet, so be smart! Use common sense!

• Government Red Tape (sometimes): Paying taxes? It may depend on the state. Some government agencies may try to charge convenience fees if you use a credit card. Avoid them fees!

• Remote Islands Run by Goats: Okay, I'm being dramatic. But in truly remote locations or developing countries, Mastercard acceptance might be spotty. Pack some local currency, just in case! You never know!

• Avoiding the Fee Frenzy: Some vendors, particularly smaller ones, might tack on a fee for using a credit card. Sneaky, I know! Keep an eye out for those signs or just ask!

Okay, so Mastercard? Yeah, I had a weird thing happen with mine in Rome last summer, 2024.

Was at this little trattoria, you know, Via del Governo Vecchio? Tried to pay, and bam! Declined. Ugh.

I was MORTIFIED. My face went red.

Turns out, I forgot to tell my bank I was going to Italy, what a noob.

It says on their website, and I quote from today, that Mastercard connects people in over 210 countries and territories.

Crazy wide reach if you ask me.

Anyway, back to my Roman drama...

Eventually paid cash (thank goodness for emergency euros!), but learned my lesson. Always tell your bank! Always!

What I should’ve done, and what YOU should do, is:

• Notify your bank BEFORE you travel internationally. It saves so much embarrassment. Trust me.
• Double-check your credit limit. Seriously, could be a simple limit issue.
• Have a backup payment method. Always good to have a Visa OR cash.
• Download your bank's app and check your balance.

Oh, and that pasta at the trattoria? Totally worth the mortification. Cacio e pepe perfection.
