Starting August 24, 2024, the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) in Hong Kong will introduce contactless payment options for passengers, eliminating the need for Octopus Cards. This move aims to provide greater flexibility and convenience for travelers.

In addition to the existing Octopus Card, passengers will now be able to use Visa, Mastercard, and UnionPay cards to enter and exit MTR stations. This new contactless payment system offers several benefits:

• Seamless Access: Passengers can simply tap their contactless cards on the reader at turnstiles to enter and exit MTR stations, eliminating the need for separate tickets or tokens.
• Reduced Wait Times: Contactless payment reduces queueing times at ticket machines and customer service counters, speeding up the boarding process.
• Wider Acceptance: The acceptance of Visa, Mastercard, and UnionPay cards makes it easier for visitors and international travelers to use the MTR without needing to purchase an Octopus Card.

To use the contactless payment system, passengers must ensure that their contactless cards are enabled for contactless transactions. Passengers can check with their card issuers to confirm if their cards support contactless payments.

For those who prefer to continue using Octopus Cards, they will still be accepted as an optional payment method. However, the introduction of contactless payment options provides an alternative for those who may not have an Octopus Card or prefer the convenience of using their bank cards.
