Currently, Mastercard holders enjoy the most extensive credit card acceptance. You can now confidently use your Mastercard on a range of services including:

• Star Ferry: Enjoy iconic harbour crossings with a simple Mastercard tap.
• Trams: Glide along the city’s historic tram lines, paying directly with your Mastercard.
• Selected Ferries: Various ferry routes now accept Mastercard payments, offering a convenient alternative to cash.
• MTR (Mass Transit Railway): This is a significant development. The MTR, Hong Kong’s extensive subway system, now largely accepts Mastercard payments, making navigating the city’s underground network significantly easier for credit card users.

Important Note: While the MTR’s inclusion is a major step forward, there are still exceptions. Specifically, New Lantao Bus routes remain excluded from Mastercard acceptance. This is important to note if you’re planning trips to Lantau Island, home to the Big Buddha and Disneyland. You’ll still need cash or an Octopus card for these routes.
