Is Grab available outside Malaysia?

Okay, so like, is Grab just a Malaysia thing? Nope!

Grab operates outside of Malaysia. It's in other Southeast Asian countries.

Like, I used Grab all the time when I was backpacking in Thailand, around Chiang Mai specifically, back in January '23. Super cheap rides, way easier than trying to haggle for a tuk-tuk price.

It's definitely in Vietnam and Cambodia too. I think I used it in Cambodia's Phnom Penh, to get from the airport to my hostel (cost me maybe 7 dollars, something like that? I was using USD at the time, that's for sure).

It's cool seeing a Southeast Asian company doing so well, ya know? They're always adding new stuff to the app, or so it seems. Good for them, honestly.

Can I use GrabPay later overseas?

Ugh, GrabPay overseas, right? It was a nightmare in Thailand last June. I needed to pay for a ridiculously overpriced tuk-tuk ride, my wallet was practically empty, and I was relying on GrabPay Later. Panic set in. Seriously. Sweaty palms.

My phone was almost dead, too. I swiped, hoping, praying, that it would work. It did! Thank god. No extra charges. That was a relief. But the whole process felt dodgy.

It's a smooth system, surprisingly. I always feared using PayLater abroad would be a total mess. This wasn't the case. But I was still stressed.

Here's what I remember:

  • Location: Bangkok, Thailand.
  • Time: June 2024.
  • Feeling: Intense anxiety! Followed by relief.

I actually checked my Grab app afterwards. Everything was deducted correctly from my GrabPay balance. No issues.

Point is, it worked flawlessly, despite my initial worries. My balance updated instantly. I was so happy.

Which country can use GrabPay?

GrabPay? Mostly Indonesia, right? But also Malaysia, like when I went to KL last summer... So hot there. Singapore too, think my sister uses it there all the time for, you know, everything. Thailand, yup def Thailand, used it at Chatuchak Weekend Market, total lifesaver. And Vietnam, yeah, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, all over. Oh, almost forgot! My friend, he lives in the Philippines. He says he uses GrabPay there sometimes now too, getting pretty popular.

  • Indonesia: Super common. Like, everyone uses it.
  • Malaysia: Yeah, pretty widespread, especially in the cities.
  • Singapore: Definitely. My sister swears by it.
  • Thailand: Used it a bunch in Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
  • Vietnam: Yep, getting more and more popular there.
  • Philippines: Newer, I think, but definetly expanding there. Heard it's catching on.

Oh and, like, besides those countries, heard its in Cambodia now too. Not too sure how widely it's used there though.

Is Grab allowed in Bangkok airport?

Bangkok airport? Grab it while you can. Level 1, Gate 4. Like a secret rendezvous. Though not so secret, given it's the designated spot. Imagine the chaos otherwise. A Grab free-for-all. Suitcases flying, tourists scrambling. Not exactly the Thai serenity you're after. 24/7 pick-up. Convenient, yes. Like a 7-Eleven for rides. Just don't expect a Slurpee.

  • Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK): That's the one. Don't go wandering to Don Mueang expecting a Grab.
  • Passenger Terminal, Level 1, Gate 4: It's like the airport's version of "meet me by the clock tower." Only, replace the clock tower with…well, Gate 4.
  • 24/7: Vampires, rejoice. Early birds, you too. No waiting around like a lost puppy.

My friend Barry once tried to Grab from Gate 7. Let's just say it didn't go well. Ended up taking the train. Moral of the story? Gate 4. Gate 4. Gate 4. It's important.

Can I use Grab with a US number?

Okay, Grab and US number… hmm.

  • You can use a US number to register.

Wait, really? I always thought it was a VN thing, since I used it a lot in Vietnam, dang.

  • It doesn't need to be a Vietnamese number.

Oh, but then how do you communicate? Ah, right...

  • Texting with the driver through the app works.

So I guess it's like Uber, where your number is masked? Makes sense for safety. But then...registration. Register in your home country, right? So use the US number there.

  • You register in your home country.

Makes sense. Then when you travel, the app still works? Assuming data roaming, of course. Ouch, data roaming costs are killer now!

Why didn't I think of using my US number before? Facepalm!

Expanding thoughts:

  • Number Masking: Grab likely uses number masking, which provides a proxy number, protecting your actual phone number.
  • Data Roaming: Data roaming charges can be expensive, so it's best to check with your provider for international data plans.
  • Payment Methods: You can link multiple payment methods to your Grab account, including credit cards and e-wallets.
  • Localization: Ensure your app settings, including language and currency, are set correctly for the country you are in.
  • International Use: Grab may have different features or availability based on the region. Confirm which services are offered in your location.
  • Registration: The key takeaway is that you can register with the mobile phone number of your country of residence.
