Can I withdraw US dollars from ATM in Vietnam?

Withdrawing US Dollars from ATMs in Vietnam: What You Need to Know

As a foreign traveler in Vietnam, it's important to understand the limitations of withdrawing US dollars from ATMs. Unlike many other countries, Vietnamese ATMs do not dispense foreign currencies.

Currency Accepted

Although foreign currencies such as US dollars, Euros, and British pounds may be accepted for deposits, only Vietnamese Dong (VND) is dispensed from ATMs. This means that if you deposit US dollars into an ATM, it will be converted to VND and you will receive VND in cash.

Conversion Rates

The conversion rate applied by ATMs may vary depending on the bank and the specific ATM. It's advisable to check the exchange rate before making a transaction to avoid any unexpected charges.

Fees

In addition to the conversion fee, most ATMs in Vietnam charge a withdrawal fee. This fee varies from bank to bank, but typically ranges from 50,000 VND to 150,000 VND (approximately $2.50 to $7).

Alternatives to ATM Withdrawals

If you need US dollars specifically, there are alternative options available:

• Currency Exchange: You can exchange US dollars for VND at currency exchange booths located throughout Vietnam. However, be sure to compare rates from different exchange bureaus to get the best deal.
• Money Transfer: If you have a bank account in the United States, you can use a money transfer service to send US dollars directly to someone in Vietnam. The recipient can then withdraw the funds in VND from their local bank account.

Conclusion

While it's not possible to withdraw US dollars directly from ATMs in Vietnam, you can still access your funds by depositing foreign currency and withdrawing VND. Be aware of the conversion rates and fees associated with ATM withdrawals, and consider alternative options such as currency exchange or money transfers if you specifically need US dollars.
