Direct Flights to Laos: Are They Available?

Okay, so flights to Laos, huh? Let’s see…are direct flights even a thing?

Flights to Laos? Hmm, quick search says: Luang Prabang (1h 10m+) from ₫7,902,507. Vientiane (1h 0m+) from ₫6,433,000 for dates around Dec 20-24. So, are they truly direct?

Well, my experience trying to get there last year (March 2023, from Ho Chi Minh City) tells me “direct” is a generous term. I think it was around 5,500,000 VND- flight VN921.

I swear that “1h 10m+” and “1h 0m+” things almost always mean a stop somewhere. Did they really mean direct or fast connecting?

Ugh, I hate airlince spellings! If I’m wrong… happy travels. But, doubel check! It’s Laos, it’s beautiful, and you will enjoy it very much.

What are the major airports in Laos?

Wattay International, that’s the big one, right? In Vientiane. Always a madhouse. So crowded. I hate the crowds! Ugh. Need to book flights earlier next time. Seriously. Thinking about Luang Prabang next. Their airport, smaller, I heard. Much calmer atmosphere? Hope so. Less of a hassle.

Then there’s Pakse. Southern Laos. Beautiful area. Been there once, amazing temples. The airport there… functional. Not glamorous, but fine.

Savannakhet. That’s another one, east. Near the Mekong. Remember that amazing river cruise? I loved it! The airport itself though? Nothing special. Just a way to get in/out.

Domestic flights… So many options! Luang Namtha, Phongsali… names that just sound exotic. I want to go to all of them. This year, definitely, Luang Namtha trekking. Xieng Khouang sounds interesting too. Those mysterious plains of jars… The airports themselves? Probably small, but who cares. It’s the destinations that matter! Oudomxay, Sam Neua… too many choices! Seriously considering a month-long trip in 2024.

Key airports: Wattay (Vientiane), Luang Prabang, Pakse, Savannakhet. Domestic ones are all smaller, obviously.

  • International: Wattay, Luang Prabang, Pakse, Savannakhet.
  • Domestic: Luang Namtha, Xieng Khouang, Phongsali, Oudomxay, Sam Neua.

Where can I fly direct to Laos?

Ugh, Laos. Tried to get there in 2024 from London. No direct flights, a total nightmare. Seriously, what a hassle. Had to go through Bangkok. Suvarnabhumi Airport. Crowds, man, so many people. Felt claustrophobic. Spent hours waiting. Missed my connecting flight because of a ridiculously long immigration line. Lost my temper. Seriously stressed. Needed a beer. A really strong one.

Next time, I’m planning better. More research. Definitely not flying through Bangkok again. That airport is a monster. My travel agent suggested Hanoi. Maybe that’ll be less stressful. Who knows.

Key things I learned the hard way:

  • No direct flights to Laos from Europe or the US. Period.
  • Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport is a massive pain. Prepare for huge crowds and delays.
  • Always book extra connection time. Seriously. You’ll need it.

I’m considering Kuala Lumpur next time. Seems like a better option. But still… gotta connect somewhere. It sucks. Laos is beautiful, though. Worth the trouble. Maybe.

How early should I get to Vientiane Airport?

Vientiane Airport: Arrive two hours before.

Check-in closes 30 minutes prior. No exceptions.

  • Minimum: Two hours. Period.
  • Counters shut. Thirty minutes. Sharp.
  • My flight? 6 AM. I’m there at 4. Don’t be late like my ex.

Additional Information:

  • Factor in traffic. Vientiane mornings… unpredictable.
  • Security? Lines can be long. Longer than my patience.
  • Grab coffee inside. It’s overpriced. I still buy it.
  • Baggage drop? Can be a zoo. Remember ID. Passport.
  • Don’t forget your charger! Damn, i forgot mine this time.
  • Lost baggage? Don’t count on it. Pack light next time!
  • Duty-free? Eh. Tourist traps, mostly. Still looking for that local silk scarf tho.
  • Keep your boarding pass visible. Don’t misplace it like my car keys, gah.
  • Watch for gate changes. Annoying, but they happen.
  • Relax. You’re in Laos. The time is…different. Or is it? I’m not even sure.
  • Wifi? Spotty. I bring a local sim card anyway. Worth it.
  • Learn a few Lao phrases. Khop chai. Sabaidee. Basic politeness.
  • Download offline maps. Saves stress. Trust me.
  • Exchange currency beforehand. Airport rates are a rip-off. Or whatever.
  • Check visa requirements. Seriously. Don’t be that guy. My cousin almost missed his connecting flight once.
  • Don’t trust the departure screens completely. Confirm at the gate.
  • Stay aware. Petty theft happens. Keep your valuables secure. I carry a cross body bag.
  • If you are taking a domestic flight, also follow the guidelines above.

Is Vietjet strict on baggage?

VietJet’s baggage rules? Brutal.

Hand luggage: One piece. Max 56x36x23cm. No exceptions.

Checked bags: 20kg limit. Over? Pay extra. Expect hefty fees. My flight last month, they were merciless.

  • Strict adherence to dimensions. Don’t even think about exceeding them.
  • Overweight fees are substantial. Prepare for sticker shock.
  • My experience: Saw multiple passengers hit with excessive charges in 2024.
  • No wiggle room. Their policy is unforgiving. Prepare accordingly. I learned this the hard way.
