Can you get foreign transaction fees waived?

It's possible, but difficult, to get foreign transaction fees waived. Contact your credit card issuer's customer service and request a waiver. Success is more likely with long-term cardholders, but approval isn't guaranteed.

Can foreign transaction fees be waived?

Okay, so about ditching those pesky foreign transaction fees… let me tell ya, it’s a gamble.

Basically, yes, you can try getting them waived, but honestly? It’s not super likely. Foreign transaction fees are charges applied when you use your credit card abroad or for purchases from a foreign-based merchant.

Here’s what I did. I called up the customer service line of my, like, super old Capital One card. This was maybe two years back, August 2022 or something, after a trip to Barcelona. Thought I’d give it a shot.

I asked nicely. Really nicely. Mentioned I’d been a loyal customer forever. The rep was polite, but firm. No dice. Said it was “policy.” Sigh.

They might be more lenient if you’re a VIP client, spend a ton, or something. I’m just, well, me. So, the chances of success depend on factors like your relationship with the bank. And, I’d bet, a bit of luck.
