To work as a train driver in Australia, your occupation must be on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) or Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL). If so, you can apply for a skilled migration visa. Check the lists to see if train driver is currently included, as eligibility changes.

So, you’re dreaming of driving trains Down Under, huh? Australia! Sounds amazing, right? I mean, who wouldn’t want to swap whatever dreary commute they’re stuck with for, you know, Australia? Seriously though, can you actually do it?

Well, it’s not quite as simple as hopping on a plane with your lucky conductor’s hat. Turns out, there are these lists – the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) and the Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL). Think of them as the super-exclusive guest lists for Aussie jobs. Your job, being a train driver, needs to be on one of those lists to even get a look-in. Otherwise, it’s a no-go, I’m afraid. I remember reading about a friend of a friend who tried to move to Canada as a chef – turns out, his specific type of chef wasn’t on the list, so it was a whole lot of wasted effort, heartbreaking, really.

The thing is, these lists, they change. Like, all the time. So, even if it’s on there now, don’t take it for granted. You really, really need to check – maybe even obsessively – to see if “train driver” is still on the approved list before you get your hopes up too high. I learned that the hard way trying to get my hands on that limited edition Lego set last Christmas… completely missed the boat! It’s a real bummer if you spend ages planning, only to find out your dream job isn’t eligible.

So yeah, research, research, research! It’s a total drag, I know, but way less of a drag than getting all excited only to be let down. Good luck! Seriously, I hope it all works out for you. Let me know how it goes!
