European Train WiFi: Is it Available?

Okay, so train WiFi in Europe? It's a mixed bag, honestly.

I took the Eurostar from London to Paris last July, and their WiFi was surprisingly decent. Streamed a movie, no problem.

But then, remember that regional train in Italy, September 2022? Forget about it. Zilch. Nada. Complete dead zone.

The Trainline app is helpful sometimes, though. It says if the train should have WiFi, but... reliability? Not so much. Think it depends on the company, maybe even the specific train.

Is there free Wi-Fi on Eurail?

No. There isn't. Damn. That's a bummer. First class, huh? Sounds luxurious. But no wifi. Strange.

I was really hoping to catch up on emails. This trip... it's been tougher than I expected. Missing my dog, Buster. A lot. He hates being alone.

The first-class seats are nice, though. Big and soft. But... empty. Alone.

  • No free Wi-Fi is a major drawback. I feel disconnected.
  • USB ports are there, at least. Small comfort.
  • The view from the window is pretty though.
  • The food is... acceptable. Not great. Nothing special. It's 2024, and I expected better.

I hate this feeling of being adrift. Just... adrift. The train keeps going. And going. I should sleep. But I can't. Damn it. This whole thing is costing a fortune, and I'm paying for it all myself. I wish I could talk to someone. Anyone.

Is there Wi-Fi on Paris trains?

Paris trains, a whisper of speed, a hum beneath the city. The rhythmic clatter, a lullaby. Wi-Fi, yes, a blanket of connection, woven through the journey. It’s there, a comforting presence, on OUIGO Grande Vitesse. Those sleek, silver trains, a promise of swift passage.

Think, the vastness of France unfolding outside, a cinematic panorama. And I’m connected. Streaming, a movie perhaps, or a favorite podcast, filling the space between stations. Oh, the escape!

Does Eurail app work offline?

Okay, so, the Eurail app. Offline?

Let me tell ya, I learned that the hard way. Rome, 2023. Hot, like, seriously hot, end of July. Picture me, Sarah, clutching my Eurail pass (the paper one, ironically, lol) and sweating bullets. My phone, bless its heart, was acting up.

Hadn't downloaded the day's train schedule before leaving the hostel near Termini.

Total disaster.

Why I thought the Eurail app just magically worked with zero signal? I don't know. Dumb, I guess.

Had to find Wi-Fi. Which, btw, is not so easy in Rome when you're stressed and melting.

I think I went into some random cafe.

  • Bought an overpriced espresso.
  • Fumbled with the Wi-Fi password.
  • Finally, FINALLY, downloaded the friggin' schedule.

So, YES, the Eurail app WORKS OFFLINE... IF you're smart enough to download everything beforehand. Lesson learned: Always, always, ALWAYS download it at your accomodation! Or anywhere where u have access to a connection before hand! Seriously!

  • Pro-tip: I now download updates every morning if I can. Also, bring a portable charger. You just never know. Battery drain is real when you’re frantically refreshing for connections.
  • Alternative: A paper timetable can be a backup. Remember those exist? Maybe I should just go back to being old school! But yeah no thanks!
  • Important Note: Remember to download all your train tickets to your phone's wallet! That makes them way more available when you don't have the best cell phone data!

What is not covered in Eurail Pass?

Eurail: Trains only. Buses? Nope. Metros? Forget it. Trams? Absolutely not. Rental bikes? Ha!

Discounts exist. Rarely. Certain cities. Don't count on it.

Key exclusions:

  • Buses. Always pay separately.
  • Metros. Local transit systems. Your own expense.
  • Trams. Streetcars. Not included.
  • Rental bikes. Self-explanatory.

My 2024 trip? Learned this lesson the hard way in Paris. Expensive metro rides.

Limited exceptions apply. Don't assume anything. Check specifics.
