Do flights get cancelled for thunderstorms?

Ugh, thunderstorms. Do they ever cancel flights? You bet your sweet bippy they do! I learned that the hard way, once. Remember that trip I was so excited for, to see my sister in Denver? Yeah, that one. Massive thunderstorm rolled in, completely shut down the airport – hours of delays, then poof, flight cancelled. I was stuck in the airport, watching people frantically try to rebook, totally bummed.

So yeah, thunderstorms are a big deal. They’re not just a little bit of rain, you know? I mean, it’s not just the rain itself, it’s the whole shebang: the lightning, the crazy strong winds, the hail sometimes—it’s all super dangerous for planes. Way more than just a little drizzle. Snowstorms, those are brutal too, and wind shear? Forget about it. Icing on the wings? Nope. Fog? Visibility is key for pilots, and fog makes that impossible. It’s all pretty scary when you think about it. Makes me appreciate those pilots even more! They have a tough job. They’re responsible for a lot of lives. Makes you think twice before complaining about a little turbulence, huh?
