Yes, notify your bank before traveling internationally. Inform them of your destination and travel dates. This prevents your cards from being flagged for suspicious activity, ensuring uninterrupted access to your funds while abroad.

Traveling Overseas? Notify Your Bank?

Okay, like, should you tell your bank you're going abroad? Yeah, definitely tell them. Don't want card declined in Rome, y'know?

Think of it this way: your bank's fraud detection is like a hyperactive guard dog. Sees weird activity? Barks – aka, freezes your account.

I learned this the hard way. In Barcelona, September 2018, tried to buy churros (worth €3, so not exactly a huge suspicious purchase!). Card declined. Ugh! Embarrassing. Had to call the bank, international fees and all.

Notify bank before international travel. Include destinations and travel dates. Prevents fraud alerts/card declines.

Telling them where and when you'll be saves a lot of hassle. Plus, they'll often give you their international number, which is handy.

Now, sometimes their system still messes up. It happened to me once in Tokyo, even after notifying them (maybe I fat-fingered the dates I told them...possible!). Still better to be safe than sorry.

Do you need to inform the bank when going abroad?

Ugh, traveling. So much to do. Bank stuff, right. Definitely gotta tell them. My Chase card, for sure. Last time I forgot, and it was a nightmare. Frozen cards, phone calls that went nowhere, total chaos!

Seriously, don't skip this. You'll regret it.

My Capital One card too. I'll do it online, probably. Easier than calling. Hate those automated phone systems. They're the worst.

Travel dates? Need to find my itinerary. Stupid airlines changing stuff around all the time. June 12th to July 5th. I think. Double-check, Sarah!

Oh, and my debit card. Can't forget that! It's linked to everything. Bills, rent, even my stupid subscription to that cooking channel I hardly ever watch. Need to update everything.

  • Chase
  • Capital One
  • Debit Card (linked to everything!)
  • Travel Dates (June 12th-July 5th - confirm!!!)

It's a pain. But less of a pain than having your money locked up halfway around the world. Trust me on this one. Learned my lesson the hard way in 2022. Never again.
