Do I need visa for transit in Vietnam?

Do You Need a Visa for Transit in Vietnam?

Understanding visa requirements for transit in Vietnam is crucial when planning your travel itinerary. Here's a comprehensive explanation:

Visa Exemption for Transit

Citizens of certain countries are exempt from obtaining a visa for transit in Vietnam. This exemption applies if:

• You hold a passport issued by a visa-exempt country.
• You have a connecting flight within 24 hours.
• You remain solely within the designated transit area of the airport.

Connecting Flight Time

The 24-hour limit for visa-free transit applies to the total time between your arrival and departure flights. It includes any delays or layovers within the transit area.

Designated Transit Areas

Visa-free transit is permitted only within the designated transit areas of Vietnamese airports, such as:

• Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi
• Da Nang International Airport (DAD) in Da Nang
• Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City

Note: Some airlines may have their own designated transit areas within the airport.

Visa Requirement for Transit Exceeding 24 Hours

If your connecting flight time exceeds 24 hours or if you intend to leave the transit area, you will require a visa. You can apply for a Vietnamese transit visa at the Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your home country.

Visa-on-Arrival Policy

Vietnam offers a visa-on-arrival policy for citizens of certain countries. However, this policy does not apply to transit visas. You must obtain a transit visa in advance if you are not eligible for visa exemption or visa-on-arrival.

Conclusion

To summarize, if you hold a visa-exempt passport, have a connecting flight within 24 hours, and remain within the designated transit area, you do not need a visa to transit in Vietnam. For transit exceeding 24 hours or exiting the transit area, you must obtain a transit visa. Always check with the Vietnam Immigration Authority or your airline for the most up-to-date information on visa requirements.
