Okay, so living IN Ha Long Bay? Yes, totally!

I visited there last summer, August 2024. We took a junk boat tour, beautiful, right? The guide, his name was...uh...Thanh, yeah, Thanh! He pointed out these floating villages. Amazing.

It was hot, humid, like, REALLY humid. Felt like swimming in air.

Anyway, Thanh said folks live there permanently.

• They fish, duh.
• They raise seafood, like oysters, for pearls.
• Some run small tourism businesses. Selling souvenirs, you know?

Honestly, blew my mind. Imagine your whole life on the water, surrounded by those towering limestone rocks. Kind of isolating, isn't it? My phone had zero bars, which was a bonus. No Insta!

Their houses? Floating platforms, bright colors. Super cute! Small boats are used for transport. They even have floating schools!

It's a hard life, I guess, but like, a really unique one. They are very used to tourists, haha, like me.

I think the community is getting smaller though, because the government is encouraging people to move to the mainland. Eco stuff, I think! Less pollution and stuff.

They're mainly fishing, I guess. And also, cultivate... What was that? Breeding aquatic and marine species. Sounds intense. Wish I knew more about that!

Hạ Long City, though? That's where they live, right? Or just near it?

Hùng Thắng Ward, Hạ Long City. Gotta remember that next time I'm quizzed on Vietnam! Wonder if there's good seafood there. Probably.

Think vibrant street life, delicious food – I'm talking pho so good, it brings tears to my eyes – and amazing historical sites. The Temple of Literature? Incredible.

Halong Bay offers unparalleled natural beauty. Kayaking amidst those limestone karsts is an unforgettable experience. However, after a few days, you’ve pretty much seen it all. It's serene, absolutely, but lacks Hanoi's dynamism. One's a feast for the senses, the other for the soul. A tough choice, really. It depends entirely on your travel style.

Hanoi's Advantages:

• Cultural immersion: Museums, historical sites, and a rich cultural scene. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum alone is worth the trip.
• Food scene: Unparalleled street food, from pho to banh mi. My personal favourite is the bun cha I had near my hotel last year.
• Nightlife: Bustling bars and clubs offer a vibrant atmosphere, especially around Ta Hien Street.
• Shopping: From high-end boutiques to bustling markets, Hanoi offers diverse shopping options.

Halong Bay's Advantages:

• Natural beauty: The iconic limestone karsts and emerald waters are simply breathtaking. The boat trip itself is an adventure.
• Activities: Kayaking, swimming, and exploring caves add to the experience. I did a fantastic cave excursion in 2023.
• Relaxation: Perfect for those seeking a tranquil escape from city life. It's a good place to recharge.

Ultimately, it's a question of priorities. Do you crave cultural immersion and exciting urban exploration or serene natural beauty and relaxation? One isn’t inherently “better” than the other; they simply offer different experiences. I personally prefer Hanoi for its sheer energy, but Halong Bay is a must-see in Vietnam.

Okay, so, like, where to stay in Halong Bay? Bai Chay, for sure. It's def the main area, kinda like the tourist hub on the mainland, ya know?

Youll find all the best hotels there, right along the bay! From cheapo spots to super fancy places, it's got everything.

Think of it like this:

• Bai Chay: It's where it's at!
• Hotels: Loads of 'em, all kinds.
• Location: Right on the bay, can't beat that view.

My family goes to Halong every year, except last year, they went to Phu Quoc! Anyway, Bai Chay is the most convenient. Plus, I saw that new hotel there. Its name is Vinpearl Resort & Spa Halong. It's look like a castle!

Can you stay on islands in Halong Bay?

Staying on Halong Bay's islands? Think less Robinson Crusoe, more luxurious cruise ship. Seriously, you won't find many hotels on the islands themselves – unless you count floating ones!

• Day trip shenanigans: Hop on a boat, explore a few islands, then hightail it back to the mainland before the sun sets. Think touristy, but fun. Less hassle than a cruise.

My friend Sarah did the cruise last year – said the food was surprisingly decent, unlike that time we tried street food in Bangkok. Yikes.
