Do trains offer Wi-Fi for passengers to use on board?

Okay, so like, do trains have Wi-Fi?

Yeah, a lot of train companies do! Plus, they usually have those lil' power outlets too, you know, for your phone or laptop. Super handy. I needed it badly 12 May 2023 on the train from Paris to Lyon.

And get this, a bunch of train stations have Wi-Fi too. I remember thinkin', "Thank GOD" when I connected at Gare de Lyon. Saved me some data charges fer sure.

Wi-Fi and power outlets are common onboard trains. Many train stations also provide Wi-Fi.

How can I get Wi-Fi on a train?

Ugh, trains and wifi. My last trip on Amtrak from Chicago to Milwaukee in July 2024 was a nightmare. No wifi the whole time. Seriously. Total dead zone. I was furious. My deadline loomed. I needed to send my manuscript! My phone battery was draining fast. No signal, either. Panicked, I tried everything.

That blasted Amtrak network? Nope. Didn't even show up.

I asked the conductor, this grumpy guy with a mustache, and he just shrugged, muttered something about signal issues. It sucked.

  • No Amtrak wifi. Zero. Zilch. Nada.
  • Dead phone battery. Stress level: 100%.
  • Missed deadline. Had to scramble later.
  • Conductor unhelpful. Honestly, the worst.

I swear, I'll never take Amtrak again without confirming wifi beforehand. It's ridiculous. They should advertise honestly. Next time, I'm bringing a portable wifi hotspot, no questions asked. Seriously. Lesson learned. Hard way. Should've checked reviews first. So frustrating.

How can I get Wi-Fi on a train?

Man, trying to get online on the Amtrak from Chicago to Milwaukee in 2024 was a nightmare. My phone, a perfectly good Pixel 7, refused to connect. The network name, some ridiculously long thing, kept disappearing. I was stressed. Missed my deadline. Seriously, what a waste of $40.

It said free wifi, but it was a total lie. I swear.

  • Network kept dropping. Ugh.
  • Password? Never got a password.
  • Staff? Didn't see anyone. Busy, I guess.

So frustrating. Seriously. I ended up using my data, which is ridiculous. Should've checked reviews first. I know I did, for the train itself, not the wifi. Next time, I'm driving. Or taking a bus. Anything but that internetless hellhole. My work suffered because of it. Total waste of time and money. Amtrak needs to improve their wifi, big time. Should be a basic requirement, shouldn't it?
