We switched to the Aussie dollar, February 14th, 1966, to be exact. Before that, yeah, we had pounds, shillings, and pence – a total headache to work with, if I remember correctly.
The old £sd system – twenty shillings to a pound, twelve pence to a shilling – was a real mess. Think about trying to do your grocery shopping with that. A nightmare!
It was a pretty big deal, changing over. My grandma always talked about it. The transition itself? I'm not sure about the specifics, but it was a long time ago. The changeover, I imagine, was probably expensive for the government.
Australia used the pound (£A) from 1910 to 1966. It was replaced by the Australian dollar.
