Do trains have phone chargers?
Do trains offer passenger phone chargers?
Ugh, train chargers are a total crapshoot. In East Anglia, every seat on the newer trains – which is most of them now – has USB. Bliss.
But that's my experience. Other areas? Nope. I saw a Reddit thread about Melbourne Metro – nada. Amtrak? Mixed bag, apparently.
Remember that awful journey on the Gatwick Express last July? 2023, to be precise. £18, the ticket cost, and not a single socket in sight. My phone died mid-journey – a disaster!
So, short answer? No guarantee. Check with your specific train operator before you go. Or pack a power bank, seriously.
How are trains currently powered?
Trains? Oh honey, they're basically giant, metal caterpillars munching on electricity. Forget steam; that's grandpa's era. Diesel? So last century.
Electric power is king, alright? Think of it as a really long, very expensive extension cord.
- Third rail: Imagine a low-slung power bar, right there beside the tracks. Delicious, delicious juice for the train.
- Overhead lines: Some fancy trains are like birds, getting their power from wires above them. Much more aesthetically pleasing, I must say.
- Transformers: These are the train's personal electricians, ensuring the voltage is just right. Too much and you’ll have a smoky meltdown; too little, and you're stuck like a snail in molasses.
The electricity then spins motors—AC or DC, depending on the train's mood—that push the wheels. It's simple physics, really, unless you're my uncle who insists the trains are powered by tiny, hyperactive hamsters. He's wrong, of course. Completely. But a charmingly persistent wrong.
My cat, Mittens (she’s a Persian, naturally), finds the whole thing utterly boring. She prefers bird-watching from the window – much more engaging. She'd probably find the hamster theory more appealing.
In short: Forget the romanticized image of steam engines chugging along. It's all about electric power in 2024. The occasional battery-powered train is sneaking in there too, but that’s a whole other conversation – and probably another blog post on my cat's surprisingly astute observations. Or lack thereof.
Are there plug sockets on all trains?
Ugh, plug sockets on trains... Right. So, basically, long-distance trains have them. Almost all of them.
One per seat is the norm. Though, hmm, compartments sometimes get two? Maybe.
Poland intercity... why do trains even care about what you charge? Strange question, actually.
Reddit threads... Power sockets in trains are frequently asked about. Netherlands. Interesting. Silly socket questions in the UK. Yep, that sounds right.
How common are sockets and Wi-Fi in Germany? Always a concern. Gotta have that connectivity on the go.
I need power on my train journey or its dead to me! My phone is my life.
