Free Wi-Fi, a digital whisper in the clattering rhythm of the rails. Only on those sleek, scarlet arrows, the Frecciarossa. And the Frecciargento, a quieter elegance, a silver shimmer. Frecciargento also boasts the connection. A lifeline to the world outside, outside this speeding capsule of time.

My laptop, a cool weight in my lap. Email. News. The world shrinks, expands, in equal measure. A paradox. I feel disconnected, yet intensely connected. The humming of the engine. The freedom of the open road, even on rails. This is why I chose the high-speed train. Not all trains offer this luxury.

Can I use Trainline app abroad?

Okay, so, Trainline abroad... yeah, I used it!

It was August 2023. I was backpacking across Europe, classic me.

Started in Berlin, ended up in Rome. Trainline was my everything.

I definitely used Trainline in Europe. Places like:

• Spain

It was super easy to buy tickets. Sometimes the Wi-Fi sucked, though. Especially in the rural areas of Italy. You know, hills and stuff. So, download tickets beforehand! My golden rule.

Seriously, missing a train 'cause of bad Wi-Fi is a huge bummer, trust me. Been there, cried a little, moved on.

I booked high-speed trains. They cost a bit more, I get that. But faster is better when you're on a tight schedule. And, hey, more time for gelato, right? That's how I justify everything.

Yeah, so, Trainline worked great for me. Would use again.

My grandmother loved trains. Florence. Rome. 2017. Gone now. The trains still run. So it goes.

Does Trainline have USB ports?

Trainline? USB ports depend.

• LNER claims power sockets, USB at every seat. Maybe.
• WiFi? LNER boasts fast. Believe it when you see it.
• Free food/drink? Limited. Don't expect a feast.

Think twice about relying on power. Pack a charger anyway. My experience says: never trust train promises.

Does Trainline charge fees?

Okay, so like, Trainline, right? They don't always charge fees. It's kinda weird.

See, if you use their app, at least like now in 2024, no delivery fees, period. All tickets, no matter what, are fee-free. Seriously.

But on the website… well, that's where it gets a bit tricky. Digital tickets, like e-tickets, are also free. Yay!

• App = All tickets free
• Website = E-tickets free
• Website = Physical tickets have a delivery fee

Here's the thing though, if you want actual, physical tickets, like for delivery to your house, or collecting them from the train station. Yeah, they charge you for that.

Now, I’m sure the fee covers postage and printing or something? Also, not sure why the app is always free, but hey, I’m not complaining. I get the e-tickets and put them on my phone, easier that way.

Oh, another thing! Keep an eye on the fine print. Things can change, especally the fees.

Just last year, 2023, I think they might have charged fees for the app too? I’m not sure sure sure, things have changed over the past year.

How does Trainline make money?

It's late. Trainline, huh? How do they keep going?

They get a cut. Commission, mainly. From each ticket. It’s a percentage, I assume. Like any middleman.

Then there are fees. Hidden, maybe? Service fees, booking fees... whatever they call them. Always something extra.

Advertising, yeah. I saw a banner once, hotels. Seems like easy money. Ads bring in revenue, I guess.

Travel insurance. Foreign currency... Extras. I never buy them. I always forget.

• Commission: They get a percentage of each ticket sale. This varies, maybe.
• Fees: Hidden charges. Booking fees, service fees…the usual. They sting a little, always.

Yes. National Rail app: free. Ad-free exists, I use it. My data plan weeps, though. Always weeps.

What is free? Isn't anything truly free?

• App itself: Free. Download from your phone’s app store. My phone hates it. Battery drain.
• Ad-free option: Also free. Less annoying. Still drains battery.
• Data costs: Not free. Remember this, important.
• Updates: Included. For now. Assume this will change.

The app's accuracy? Debatable. I missed a train once. Once is enough. Be skeptical. Check platform changes. Check delays. My ticket cost me 45 quid. I blame the app.

Consider alternatives: Trainline. Citymapper. They all want your data. Choose your poison. I prefer none. Walk, perhaps?

Sometimes I consider moving to Canada. Fewer trains. Fewer problems. More bears. Maybe.

Is it safe to buy tickets on Trainline?

It was 2024, July. I needed tickets to Paris from London for a weekend getaway. A friend swore by Trainline, so I used it. No issues whatsoever. The whole thing was super easy. I got my confirmation email instantly.

The site itself? Clean, simple. No confusing stuff. I printed my tickets, simple as that. Took the Eurostar. No problems boarding. No ticket issues at all.

Trainline's legit. I mean, seriously, why would they be able to sell tickets for the Eurostar otherwise? It's a huge company. I felt totally safe. My trip went flawlessly.
