Yes, seat reservations are mandatory when using a Japan Rail Pass. This is to ensure that you have a guaranteed seat on the train, especially during peak travel times.

How to Make Seat Reservations

Seat reservations for the Japan Rail Pass can be made in advance or just before boarding.

• Advance Reservations: You can make seat reservations up to one month prior to the date of travel. Reservations can be made at any JR station in Japan or through the Japan Rail Pass online reservation service.
