Do you need a Chinese number to use Alipay?

So, you need Alipay, huh? I get it, it's practically essential in China. Do you need a Chinese number to use it? Honestly, that's what I thought at first, totally freaked me out. But nope, thank goodness, no! I registered with my own number – you know, the one from back home – before even stepping foot in the country.
