Exit visa lets you leave within 15 days. Mine took almost a week to get (March ’22, Hanoi, cost about $25, if I recall). Apply early. Don’t be like me, scrambling.
Short answer: You need an exit visa if your Vietnamese visa expires and you can’t extend it. It lets you leave Vietnam.
