Do local trains have bathrooms?

Nope, local trains are like speedy little ants; no room for plumbing! An hour's journey? Seriously? Hold it in, champ. Think of it as a hardcore fitness challenge.

• Zero bathrooms. It's a design choice, not a malfunction. Think of it as minimalist architecture.
• Station restrooms exist. Duh. Use those. Or, you know, a bush. (Just kidding... mostly.)
• It's not rocket science. Plan your hydration accordingly. I once drank an entire bottle of water and regretted it, my bladder felt like a water balloon about to pop!

My buddy Mark tried to explain the lack of toilets like it was some kinda high-concept art installation. He's a weirdo, but he makes a good point; they're saving space for more ad space and the latest reality TV shows displayed.

Seriously though, the train companies are probably saving a fortune on plumbing bills and cleaning supplies. Think of all the money they’re saving! They could be using that money to improve the questionable air conditioning situation.

Next time, plan your pee breaks like a military operation. Success is not having to wee in a plastic bottle, folks.

Do US trains have toilets?

Dude, yeah, US trains totally have toilets. Seriously, all the sleeper cars, for sure, have them. And it's not just any old toilet, okay? Think luxury. It's like a mini-hotel room on wheels. You get a shower too! And, get this, a real window, a big one! Not those tiny little things. Plus, outlets for your phone and stuff, so you don't run out of battery. It's awesome. Climate control too, obvi.

They even include meals! Crazy, right? Like a full-on dining experience. My buddy Mark went on Amtrak last year, from Chicago to New Orleans, and he raved about the food. He said the breakfast was especially good! He had eggs benedict. This is great, right?

• Amenities: Big windows, electrical outlets, climate control.

Amtrak is expensive, though. That’s the only downside. But seriously, if you can swing it, it's a way better way to travel than flying. You don't have to worry about those tiny airplane bathrooms. Much better. I'm planning a trip myself, maybe next spring to see my aunt in Denver. I'll be sure to take the train. It'll be awesome, I know it.

Where are the toilets located on a train?

Okay, so, yeah, toilets on the train. Right. I remember this one time, last summer, 2024... taking the Grand Central up to my Aunt Carol’s in Yorkshire. Ugh, Yorkshire. Anyway...

Had this massive coffee at Kings Cross, you know, those giant ones? So I'm on the train. Durham bound. I'm pretty sure I was in carriage C, cause near the front! and of course, I gotta pee like, ten minutes later.

I was like, where are these things? No signs, nothing. Okay that is not quite true, there were signs...

So I ask this conductor guy. Super nice, young dude. He points to the end of the carriage. "End of each carriage, love". Obvious, right? But I missed it! Each carriage has one.

Turns out, they’re hidden behind these kinda plain doors. Not like big obvious toilet signs. The toilets at stations are better.

• Grand Central: Usually located at the end of each carriage.
• Other Trains: check specific train layout online.
• At Stations: National Rail Enquiries has station facilities.

And don't drink a huge coffee right before a long train ride. Just, don’t. Trust me on that one.

Do you get your own bathroom on Amtrak?

Nope, unless you spring for a private room. Think of it this way: Amtrak bathrooms are like a shared college dorm shower— everyone’s seen it all. Except maybe less mildew, hopefully.

• Private rooms (Bedrooms): These have en-suite facilities, akin to a miniature airplane bathroom. Cozy, really. Tiny.

• Roomettes: You get a private toilet— thank heavens. Showers? Those are communal, and surprisingly spacious compared to the "private" ones.

Let's be honest, the whole experience is an exercise in shared intimacy. It's character building. Or maybe just character revealing. My trip last summer, well, let's just say I learned a lot about personal hygiene standards. And the size of the average American's travel-sized shampoo bottle. It's impressive. Really.
