• HEP cars: Electrical Head End Power. Heating, lighting, etc. Power hungry.
• LRC: Lightweight, Rapid, Comfortable. Supposedly.
• Outlet placement: At seats. Check the wall, below, near the window. Good luck finding it.
• Voltage: Standard North American. Adapters sometimes irrelevant. Sometimes.
• The Canadian route, in particular, has a certain...charm. Or lack thereof. Pack snacks.

The outlets… they’re there. A small comfort, really. But sometimes, you know, the phone battery still dies anyway. It’s a weird feeling, like the train itself is sucking the life out of it.

VIA Rail trains have power outlets. At least, the ones I’ve been on did. 2023. That’s the year. I specifically remember this because my laptop died.

The struggle is real, though. Finding a working outlet can be a game. Some are broken. Others are… occupied. People hogging them.

Wasn't one of those fancy USB-C ones, just a regular outlet. But hey, it WORKED. Plugged in my phone, boom, problem solved. It was literally next to the seat.

Seriously, lifesaver. Though, I guess some trains may not have 'em? I dunno. This one did! And I was grateful.

Ugh, flying last month, Southwest, flight 472 to Denver from San Diego. 2023, July, remember it vividly. Economy was a sardine can. My knees were practically in my chin. Seriously. Is it worth it? That's the question. More legroom, yeah, that's the big selling point. My knees always kill me on long flights. Ugh.

• Legroom: Extra space = less torture. Worth considering on my trip to see Aunt Mildred in Florida.
• Amenities: Pretty much the same. Movies, snacks, the usual.
• No upgrades. Darn. Wishful thinking about better entertainment I suppose. Or even outlets. I need to charge my phone!!!

Same food. Same everything else basically. Just more room for my legs to breathe. So, comfort versus price. Which is more important? Hmmm.

Okay, so I flew United Economy Plus, like, two weeks ago. It WAS better. I'm six foot, and my knees weren't touching the seat in front! That made a huge difference. I still watched reruns of that show I always rewatch on flights.

Did they even give us snacks? I swear, I only remember coffee and pretzels. Maybe I slept through it. I always get nervous when flying. So do I want the extra leg room on my next flight?

• Worth it if: Long flight, I'm restless, need to work on my laptop (even without guaranteed outlets).
• Not worth it if: Short hop, budget super tight, I plan on sleeping the whole time.

Maybe it's better to save the money and buy a better neck pillow! decisions decisions...

• Maybe? It's like asking if the sky is blue, sometimes yes, sometimes...cloudy. But seriously, expect a gamble. Not all trains are created equal, you know. Some still think it's the roaring 20s, apparently.

• Your ticket, your responsibility! They basically assume you're a Boy Scout—always prepared. So yeah, charge that phone beforehand. Consider it training for a zombie apocalypse; survival depends on it, or, at least, avoiding a fine.

• Mobile ticket? More like mobile nightmare, amirite? Imagine your battery dying mid-inspection. The horror! Seriously, pack a power bank. Seriously, charge EVERYTHING!

• And hey, if you DO find an outlet, fight for it! Just kidding! (sort of). Finding an outlet is like discovering El Dorado these days.

Also, pro tip: download your ticket as a screenshot beforehand! Then you're not dependent on internet either, lol. Learned that the hard way once, trust me! Never forget the Great Data Roaming Incident of '23... shudder.

My sister-in-law, Brenda, swears they even have USB-C. I haven’t verified this, but Brenda's usually right about stuff, so... probably? It’s 2024 and everyone uses USB-C, I’m sure of it. Unless they're using those ancient micro-USB things, but I doubt it.

It’s there, alright. Free WiFi on every single CrossCountry train. Always has been, as far as I can recall. Wish everything was that consistent.

• Availability: Every train, no exceptions.
• Classes: Standard and First Class, everyone gets it.
• Reliability: Don't expect miracles, though. Sometimes it’s spotty, especially out in the sticks.
• Purpose: Good enough for emails, I guess. Streaming... mmm, gamble.

Remember that time I was going to Bristol? Needed to send those documents, and, oh man, it just died outside Birmingham. What a mess that was. I hate Birmingham.
