Has anyone traveled the entire world?

Okay, so, world travel, right? Crazy to think about. I read somewhere, ages ago – maybe a blog post? – about Rauli Virtanen. Apparently, this Finnish guy, a journalist, was the first to hit every single country.

Seriously impressive. Imagine the dedication. I mean, I struggled to plan a two-week trip to Italy last summer. Booking flights alone took a month! The cost...ouch. Around $3,000, not counting souvenirs.

Virtanen, though. He must’ve spent a fortune, and years, countless years probably. He grew up in a rural village, so the contrast is wild, isn't it? From quiet countryside to bustling city streets everywhere.

It’s just mind-blowing. I can't even fathom the logistical nightmare. Visas, vaccinations, packing… the sheer scale of it makes my head spin. It makes my little trips feel insignificant.

He visited all 193 UN-recognized countries. Crazy. That's a serious achievement. Probably a Guinness World Record, right?

A true adventurer. I'm kinda jealous, to be honest. Makes me want to up my travel game. Maybe start with Iceland next year. Small steps, right?

Has anyone ever travelled around the world?

Sheesh, someone actually went all the way around the world? Like, all of it?

Jason Lewis, bless his cotton socks, apparently finished the first human-powered trip around the whole stinkin' planet in 2007. He rowed, biked, and probably walked a ton. Imagine the blisters!

Then Erden Eruç (in 2012) was like, "Hold my beer," and did it totally solo. Yep, all by himself! Kinda makes my trip to the grocery store seem pathetic.

  • Jason Lewis: Finished in 2007. He wasn’t alone and used only human power. Now that's some dedication. Think months of just grinding it out.
  • Erden Eruç: Finished in 2012. Went completely solo. He's the real-life version of those "stranded on a desert island" reality shows, but without the cameras. I'd rather binge watch Netflix, tbh.

Has anybody traveled around the world?

Jason Lewis. 2007. First human-powered circumnavigation. Erden Eruç. Solo. 2012.

Key achievements:

  • Human-powered global circumnavigation. A feat.
  • Solo circumnavigation. More impressive.

Further notes: My friend, a seasoned sailor, scoffed at Lewis's boat design. Said it was flimsy. Eruç's journey? Brutal. Incredible endurance. I saw a documentary. My aunt knows someone who met Eruç in Istanbul. He's apparently quite unassuming. Crazy. 2023 updates? Nothing surpasses those two. Yet.
