How to get Wi-Fi on a train?

Ugh, train Wi-Fi, right? It’s a crapshoot. Sometimes it’s blazing fast, other times…nope.

My last trip, the Amtrak from Chicago to Milwaukee on July 14th – total fail. Paid $70 for the ticket, got nada for internet. Seriously.

Most trains say they have Wi-Fi. Check the train company’s website before you go, though. Don’t assume anything.

Station Wi-Fi’s usually better. I had decent luck in Union Station in DC last month, though it was crowded. Free, of course.

So yeah, plan B is always your phone’s hotspot, but that’s data, money.

Do all trains have free WiFi?

WiFi isn’t a guarantee. Check before you board. Station WiFi exists, but onboard is carrier-specific. Power outlets are more common. Your mileage may vary. Do your homework.

  • Check with specific train line. Availability and cost change.
  • Station WiFi common. Doesn’t help on the train.
  • Outlets are spreading. More useful than spotty WiFi. My last trip on Amtrak had good outlets, crap WiFi.
  • Eurostar had solid WiFi last year. But I paid extra. Worth it.

How do I connect to train Wi-Fi?

Enable phone Wi-Fi. Select RailWire. Enter your mobile number. Receive OTP. Access Wi-Fi.

Key Differences from Railwire (2023):

  • Authentication Methods: RailWire may now offer alternative login methods besides OTP. Check their app or website.
  • Coverage: Coverage varies wildly. Expect patchy service. My experience in Chennai was abysmal.
  • Speed: Speeds fluctuate. Don’t expect consistent high-speed access. I once got 0.5mbps in Delhi.
  • Data Caps: Some stations implement data limits. Check their terms.
  • Alternative Networks: Other networks often exist alongside RailWire. Sometimes they’re better. Try them.
  • My Personal Note: Avoid peak hours. The network is congested then. My trip from Mumbai to Pune was excruciating.

Do Swiss train stations have Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi exists.

Swiss stations: connectivity provided. Not always free.

Bikes for rent. E-bikes too. Mountains beckon.

  • Currency exchange: present. Rates vary.
  • Luggage lockers: deposit bags. Forget them… briefly.

Lost keys happen. To me, at least. Once, in Zurich. Ah, Zurich.

How can I get better WiFi on my train?

So, you want blazing fast WiFi on the train? As if train WiFi wasn’t a modern marvel already, eh? Fine. Let’s play.

First, be a WiFi minimalist. Imagine your connection is a tiny pizza. Don’t share it with the entire football team! One device, one slice, got it? I mean, is streaming cat videos really that crucial on ALL your devices, Karen? (Just kidding… mostly.)

Okay, but seriously. One device. Pick your fave. And ditch the rest.
