Laos to Hanoi: Best Travel Options?

Ugh, Laos to Hanoi, right? So many choices, it’s a bit overwhelming. I remember that flight from Luang Prabang (LPQ) to Hanoi (HAN) last October, super easy, but pricey. Think it was around $150. Fast though.

Landed in Hanoi in under two hours. Much preferred that over the bus, honestly. Did that Vientiane to Hanoi bus once – never again. Took forever, like 20 hours.

Train’s an option, but it’s kind of a mess. You have to go from Vientiane to Oudomxay first, then figure out connecting transport. Did that in ’21, took like three days, so slow. Cost me about $60, though. Cheap, but exhausting.

Driving’s another way, but unless you’re into long road trips, I’d skip it. Just thinking about the border crossing makes me tired. There’s flying, bus, train, and driving.

Personally, if you value your time, fly. If you’re on a tight budget, the train’s cheapest, but the bus goes direct to Hanoi from Vientiane, which is slightly less of a headache than the train. My two cents anyway. It really depends on your priorities, you know? Ugh, travel planning.

Can you get a train from Hanoi to Laos?

No direct train.

Hanoi to Laos? Forget it. No direct rail exists. Train to Vinh. Maybe Dong Ha. Then… bus. Ugh. Brutal.

  • Vinh option: Hanoi train. Bus to Laos.
  • Dong Ha option: Similar. Train. Then more bus.
  • 12-15 hours? Minimum. Prepare.

Think I did that bus thing once… never again. My back still hasn’t recovered from the 2023 trip.

Is there a bus from Luang Prabang to Hanoi?

Luang Prabang to Hanoi by bus? Absolutely. Figure on a full day, 24 hours give or take. Price? $30-$40. Not bad for an international trip. Who knew getting around Southeast Asia could be so cheap? Makes you wonder about plane tickets. Anyhow, companies running this route: Sinh Tourist, Vientiane Bus, and Mekong Express. Choices, choices…

  • Sinh Tourist: Popular. Often booked up. Good rep though. A safe bet, probably. Air-con essential for that journey. Last time I took a Sinh Tourist bus, it was packed. Still, comfy enough.
  • Vientiane Bus: Heard they have sleeper berths. Essential for that 24-hour haul. Might be worth checking. Do they have wifi? That’d be a lifesaver. Definitely need something to kill the time.
  • Mekong Express: Another solid option. Maybe. Reclining seats for sure. I once saw a guy reading “War and Peace” on a Mekong Express bus. Dedication. Or maybe boredom. Who knows?

Thinking about these long bus journeys… it really puts things in perspective. Slow travel. Intense. Forces you to experience the passage of time differently. Plus, the scenery. Rolling hills. Jungle. Rivers. Vietnam and Laos… so much beauty. And speaking of beauty, the food in Hanoi is incredible. Bun cha. Pho. Banh mi. Can’t wait. Might stop for a bowl of pho in Luang Prabang first though. Tough decisions.

Booking online usually saves a few bucks. Sometimes you can haggle at the station. But better safe than sorry, right? Book in advance, especially during peak season. Visa situation: definitely double-check that. Don’t want any surprises at the border. Bring snacks. Lots of snacks. And water. A good book. And a portable charger. That about covers it.

How far is Laos from Vietnam by road?

Laos and Vietnam… yeah. That border is long, really long.

It’s not a simple answer, how far? Over 2,000 km is their shared border. Feels like a lifetime, honestly, just thinking about it.

Hanoi to Vientiane, I think… that drive, yeah, roughly 750-800 km, could be. Long, too long I mean.

Depends where you’re going, ya know? A small village might only be right across it.

Always check a map, always, for yourself.

  • Border Length: Over 2,000 km (the real length is close to 2,130 km)
  • Example Route: Hanoi to Vientiane, approximately 750-800 km. I hate roads like that, so long.
  • Factors Affecting Distance: Specific starting and ending points, road conditions. Last time it rained a lot.
  • Importance of Planning: Always check a reliable map or route planner. Google Maps, or something, for current conditions, I guess.

Which is the best courier service to Vietnam?

Best courier? Vietnam Post, perhaps. Or Viettel. Depends.

  • Viettel Post: Solid infrastructure. Wide reach.
  • Giao hàng tiết kiệm: Budget-friendly. Slow, sometimes.
  • Giao hàng nhanh: Speed. Premium price. Expect delays. My experience: underwhelming.
  • Vietnam Post: Reliable. Predictable. Not the fastest.

DHL? FedEx? Overpriced. Unless you need absolute certainty, unnecessary. Local options suffice. 2024 update: Viettel’s expansion is impressive.

Consider your needs. Urgency? Cost? Simple equation. Choose accordingly. Location matters. Rural areas? Viettel may struggle. Urban centers? All options viable. It’s a gamble. Life is. Choose wisely. My package? Lost. Last year. Still bitter.
