Ugh, Hanoi traffic – a wild ride! Last June, my Noi Bai airport taxi to Hoan Kiem Lake cost about $18 – around 400,000 VND. Pricey, but convenient.
Grab's amazing there. So much cheaper than taxis. I used GrabBike tons, weaving through the chaos.
Electric buses are a thing, right? I saw them, but never actually rode one. Seemed…interesting.
Cyclos are touristy, fun for a short trip, maybe around the Old Quarter. Negotiate the price beforehand, though!
Motorbike taxis (xe ôm) are everywhere, fast but a little scary for a first-timer. Definitely haggle.
Scooter rental: I did this once, huge mistake. The traffic's insane. Not recommended unless you're a pro.
Does Hanoi, Vietnam have Uber?
Ugh, no Uber in Hanoi! I was there last summer, July 2024, baking in that crazy heat. Thought, "Easy peasy, I'll just Uber from the Old Quarter to the Temple of Literature." Nope. Downloaded the app, punched in the destination, and… nada.
Total fail. Grab is king there, learned that real quick. Ended up using it all the time to move about. My feeling, it was better anyway; local support, right?
It was annoying, at first. Seriously considered using Lyrf, but a local told me, "Not a chance!" It was all Grab, baby! Oh, the humidity was a killer.
Thinking back, Grab worked fine. Cheaper maybe? Here's what I remember though:
- Grab cars were super common.
- Grab bikes are even more common. Daredevils, they are.
- Negotiating with taxis? Forget it. Grab saves the haggling headaches, but be sure to confirm your location.
- Download Grab before you go. Trust me.
It’s not like back home where you just hop in any ride-share. And I really hated how the map was confusing a few times and I had to call, then explain stuff and ugh! Just a whole thing.
