How does the bus system work in Portugal?

So, Portugal’s buses… how do they actually work? That’s something I’ve been wondering myself, you know? I mean, I’ve only been there a couple of times, but my impression? Pretty decent, during the day at least. You can usually flag one down without too much trouble, which is a huge plus. Remember that time in Lisbon? We were completely lost, wandering around Alfama at like, midday, and a bus just magically appeared – saved our bacon, honestly. It was packed, though, like sardines! But hey, it got us where we needed to go.

Night buses though? Oof. That’s a different story. They’re around, I guess, but definitely not as frequent as during the day. I remember trying to get back to my hostel in Porto one night after a Fado show – it was a late one – and I swear I waited for what felt like an eternity. Seriously, eternity. And I was freezing! It was only then I really realised how much less reliable the night service is, especially outside the major cities. You’d need to plan carefully, or maybe have a backup plan, because getting stranded isn’t fun, believe me. I nearly ended up walking, haha!

So, overall? Daytime travel in Portugal by bus is, in my experience, pretty smooth sailing. Night time? A little more…adventurous. You kinda need to be more prepared. But hey, that’s part of the charm, right? At least, that’s what I tell myself.
