Permanent residency: It's not automatic. Prove your worth. Prove your bank account. Prove your existence.

Obtain a residence permit. Then you'll get the permanent one. Eventually. It’s a process. A long, tedious, French process. Don't expect miracles.

Legal loopholes are for lawyers. I have no idea about them. I only know paperwork. Mountains of paperwork. My visa expired in March, 2024.

Okay, so, permanent residency in France just cuz you buy a house? Nah, not automatic.

I bought a lil' place near Nice, 2023, dreamy, right? Thought I was golden.

Buying that house didn't get me residency. I found that out quick.

Had to look into visas, the Retraite thing.

• Retraite Visa needs... income, like, provable income.
• Owning the house helps.
• You gotta show you can afford to live there.

Work in Spain, live in France? That’s...tricky.

Paying taxes in Spain whilst living in France full-time? Yikes.

Remember talking to this tax guy, Pierre? In 2024. He said that I'd have to prove that I was actually living in France full-time in order to get the Retraite visa.

• Need to prove you live there most of the year.
• French taxes are no joke. Just sayin'.

Basically, buying the house helped, but it’s all about the long-stay visa. Then maybe think about permanent residency, later.

• Citizenship: Years of residence required. Integration assessed. It's a test. You're graded. Pass or fail.
• "Easy" is relative. I thought it was pretty easy, got citizenship within a year. My friend had to go to court because of a parking ticket. Not the same story for everyone, clearly.
