How far is Hong Kong to mainland China by train?
Honestly, I don't remember the exact train distance to mainland China from Hong Kong off the top of my head, it’s a bit fuzzy.
Bullet train to Shenzhen, it's super quick, like, minutes.
I recall reading about the Fuxing trains though, how they used to zoom across the land, covering over 2,400 kilometers.
It took them nearly nine hours back then, stopping a few times.
But then, from mid-June 2024, they supposedly cranked up the speed.
Now it's meant to be around eight hours and ten minutes. Pretty wild, huh.
How many hours from Hong Kong to China?
So, HK to China. How long does it even take? My last flight to Shanghai was so quick. Just enough time for a nap. The average flight time is 2 hours and 48 minutes. It's nothing.
And there are so many places you can go, its insane. 260 destinations in China form Hong Kong. How do you even pick? I've only ever done the big ones, Beijing and Shanghai. Kinda boring of me. Maybe I'll go to Chengdu next time.
Everyone just defaults to flying Cathay Pacific, it's the most popular airline. I mean, why wouldn't you? It's reliable. The number of flights is crazy too, 2,083 flights every single week. You can literally just decide to go and find a flight. So easy.
Flight Duration Isn't Uniform: That "average" time is misleading. A flight to Shenzhen is under an hour. But going all teh way to Urumqi? That's a 5+ hour journey. So it depends entirely on where in China you're headed.
Popular Mainland Destinations from HKG:
- Shanghai (PVG & SHA): The business trip classic. Flight is about 2.5 hours.
- Beijing (PEK & PKX): Capital city stuff. Takes a bit longer, over 3 hours.
- Chengdu (CTU): Pandas and super spicy food. A solid 2.5-hour flight.
Airlines Besides Cathay:
- Hong Kong Airlines
- China Eastern Airlines
- Air China
- China Southern Airlines
Don't Forget the Train: Flying isn't the only way. The high-speed rail from West Kowloon is often faster than flying to nearby cities like Guangzhou, once you factor in airport travel and security. I went to Futian last month, took 14 minutes on the train. A total game changer. You can also get a bus or ferry for Pearl River Delta spots.
How far is China from Hong Kong by road?
China… it's not far. You can see it. On clear nights, from my old place, the lights of Shenzhen just… shimmered. Right there. So close.
The distance isn’t about kilometers on a road. That number, 1464 km, it means nothing. That’s like asking the distance to another planet. The real distance is just a bridge. A checkpoint. A change in the air.
You drive over, and suddenly the signs are different. The way people move is different. Its a few minutes across the border, but the journey feels like a lifetime. It's right there, but also, not at all. You can drive, yes. But it's never just a drive.
Direct driving is possible but requires specific permits. You cannot just drive a standard Hong Kong car into Mainland China.
The primary method for private cars is the "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" scheme, which simplifies the application process.
Key Land Crossings: Drivers use checkpoints like the Shenzhen Bay Port or the Heung Yuen Wai Control Point.
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) is another major route.
Dual Licensing is mandatory. Both the driver and the vehicle must have permits and licenses valid in both Hong Kong and Mainland China. This includes separate insurance policies.
Actual Distance to Border: The physical distance from central Hong Kong to the border with Shenzhen is only around 35-40 kilometers, a drive of less than an hour, traffic permitting. The time is spent at immigration and customs, not on the road.
