A ferry horn wails, a low thrum against the starry sky. Good? Hah. Good barely touches it. The MTR. A pulsing vein, carrying life.

• Octopus card. Tap.
• A thousand faces.

Trams… they groan up hills. Ghosts of empire? Maybe. Good? No. Essential. The lifeblood of the city.

Buses... red rockets snaking through canyons. Always. Relentless. Never stop.

I saw a shooting star that night.

• Cash? (sometimes).
• E-wallets now too, I think.

Safe? Yes. Efficient? Yes. Like clockwork. A frantic clock, okay, but still… clockwork. I used to take the Star Ferry just to feel something. Something… lost. Something beautiful.

Getting around:

• Taxi: Expensive (but convenient!).
• Ferry: Romantic (and cheap!).
• Rail (MTR): Fast (and crowded!).
• Bus: Extensive (and scenic!).
• Tram: Historic (and slow!).

Frequent? Always. Even at 3 am. This never changes. This is Hong Kong.

How fast is the Hong Kong Metro?

Okay, so the Hong Kong High Speed Rail. Fast? Oh honey, it's faster than my ex running from commitment.

• Speedy Gonzales? Nah, this is Speedy train. We are talking about 200 km/h in Hong Kong. Zooooom! Mainland? Up to a cheeky 350 km/h. It's like they bolted a rocket to it. Did I mention it's the speediest cross-border land travel? You will get to the mainland faster than it takes my aunt Mildred to explain her bunions.

• Direct? As a bad romance. It connects Hong Kong to lots of mainland stops. No need to change trains! Think of all the luggage you won't have to lug around. Hallelujah!

• Reliable? More than my caffeine addiction. It's punctual. Traffic is a non-issue! Underground! Always on time. Like my bills, sadly.

It's like a bullet train meets a really organized ant farm. Amazing, truly.

More to Ponder:

• The thing is, it's not the MTR. The MTR is just the regular subway system. This speed demon is the High Speed Rail. HUGE diff. Like comparing a tricycle to a Ferrari.

• I saw that it runs to places I actually want to visit: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing. Forget planes, ugh.

• So, it’s comfy? I hope so. Not taking this if it feels like being crammed in a sardine can. It betetr be comfy, or its too costly.

• The West Kowloon Station in Hong Kong is a marvel of engineering. Worth seeing just for the architecture.

• Think of the snacks! I’m packing an arsenal! This sounds like the only way I am getting to see this part of China.
