How long do residency permits last?

Ugh, residency permits. Its kind of a relief to think about them, honestly! My understanding is that most Green Cards are good for a decade, which feels like forever from now. But, the two-year ones? Those make me nervous! Conditional permanent resident status sounds so temporary, and two years would fly by. I can only imagine the anxiety of potentially having to renew so quickly. It just makes you wonder if you are still here!

Residency permits…how long do they last, anyway? It’s such a loaded question, isn’t it? I mean, just thinking about it gives me a weird mix of relief and anxiety. Like, I know most Green Cards are valid for ten whole years – which, let’s be honest, feels like an eternity when you’re in the thick of things. Ten years! So much can happen. But then there are those two-year conditional ones… those are the ones that keep me up at night. “Conditional permanent resident status” – it just sounds so… precarious, you know? Two years would absolutely fly by. I have a friend, Sarah, who went through that, and she said the whole two years felt like a blur of paperwork and stress, constantly worrying about what would happen after. Can you imagine? Having that hanging over your head? It makes you wonder, are you really here, you know? Like, truly here? It must be so unsettling. I mean, two years is barely enough time to get settled, let alone build a life. Ugh, the whole thing just makes my head spin.
