How long to visit Ha Long Bay? Ideal trip length?

Okay, so Ha Long Bay... how long should you actually go for? Seriously, that's the question I wrestled with before my own trip. Lemme tell ya what I think.

A day trip is doable from Hanoi, sure. Expect to lose like, half a day just getting there and back, right?

But honestly? It felt kinda rushed when my cousin did it, she went, came back, and didn't relax.

For me, the sweet spot was an overnight cruise. I paid about 150 USD for a 2-day/1-night cruise (October, last year) & that felt way better.

Really soaked in the views, y'know? Exploring caves at a slower pace? Priceless.

If you've got the time (and budget), maybe a 3 or 4-day cruise would be even more amazing. Me? Two days was perfect. I got to swim, kayak, eat lots of fresh food. I'm thinking to go back next year.

  • Day Trip: 12-14 hours (including travel from Hanoi)
  • Overnight Cruise: 2-4 days is recommended for a full experience.

How long is the journey from Hanoi to Halong Bay?

Hanoi to Halong Bay: 130 kilometers. Two and a half hours via expressway.

  • Travel time: Variable. Traffic. Expect delays.
  • Optimal trip: One day in Hanoi. Next day: Halong. Efficient. Ruthless.
  • My last trip: August 2024. Smooth sailing. Almost. Near miss with a motorbike. Annoying.

Note: Expressway conditions unpredictable. Always confirm. Prioritize punctuality.

Time is a river. Unstoppable. Enjoy the view. Or not. Your choice. It matters little.

This is how life is. Efficient, indifferent.

Can Halong Bay be a day trip?

Okay, so Halong Bay as a day trip from Hanoi? Absolutely! It’s totally doable, even if it's, like, a reeeally long day, ya know? It's a must-see!

I mean, like, Vietnam's got this crazy beautiful bay, and you shouldn't miss it just 'cause your on a short trip. It’s really unforgettable!

You'll have to wake up super early, tho, cuz the drive itself takes, uh, a few hours, like 2 or 3 hours each way. And uhm book a tour. They’re pretty well-organized and pack in as much as possible.

Things that could be on the itinerary:

  • Boat cruise: Duh. That’s kinda the whole point.
  • Kayaking: You can explore caves and stuff. I did this last year, it was so cool.
  • Cave visits: Some tours include these lit up caves. They're pretty touristy, but still, pretty cool. I always forget the names, though.
  • Maybe swimming, depending on the time of year and the tour you picked.

Honestly, a day trip is enough to see the highlights. You wont see everything, but better than nothing, right? It's totally worth it.

And seriously, book it in advance! Last time I went, my cousin almost didn’t get a spot 'cause everything was full. He was so pissed!

How long should you spend in Halong Bay?

Two days. Two days feels right for Ha Long Bay.

One day? Sure, if you're rushed. But you won't feel it, really.

Two days gives you time to, I don't know, breathe it in.

  • Cruises are popular.
  • Kayak trips. That's cool.
  • Hidden caves always sound cooler than they are.

I went with my ex, Sarah. 2018? Maybe 2019? Anyway.

Saw some floating villages. Real people live there. It's not just for show.

The water...the green. It's something else. Do it.

  • I don't really remember what we ate on the cruise.
  • Sarah liked the sunsets more than me, I think.
  • She took, like, a million pictures. Ugh.

Two days, minimally. Three if you want to slow down.
